Part 16

The evidence was too overwhelming for Jason’s lawyer to mount any real defense.
He tried to argue that the financial situation was temporary, a misunderstanding between partners.
But every word he spoke sounded hollow, a weak echo against Robert's mountain of facts.
Suddenly, Jason stood up, knocking his chair backward.
The loud screech of metal against the floor made everyone flinch.
"This is a setup!" he shouted, pointing a shaking finger at me.
"She planned this! She stole my company keys! She leaked those documents to the press! She's ruining me!"
"Mr. Vance, sit down immediately," the judge warned, her voice dripping with authority.
"She's a liar! She’s always been a quiet, manipulative snake!" Jason bellowed, losing all control.
His brother Julian tried to pull him down by his sleeve, but Jason pushed him away.
His face was distorted with rage, the exact same rage he used to unleash on me behind closed doors.
Only this time, there were no walls to hide it.
The entire courtroom, the bailiffs, and most importantly, the judge, were seeing the monster for who he truly was.
"Bailiff, secure the respondent," Justice Mercer ordered sharply.
Two large armed guards stepped forward, grabbing Jason by his arms and forcing him back into his seat.
"One more outburst, Mr. Vance, and I will hold you in contempt of court, and you will wait for my ruling in a cell," the judge stated, her eyes flashing with anger.
Jason panting heavily, glared at me, his chest heaving.
I didn't blink.
I looked at him with nothing but cold indifference.
Seeing that he could no longer make me flinch or cry was the ultimate punishment for him.
He had lost his power, his money, and his dignity.

His lawyer leaned over, whispering frantically in his ear, but Jason wasn't listening anymore.
He looked defeated, broken, a man realizing that the trap he had set for his wife had snapped shut on his own neck.
