Part 45

The threat from the Architect wasn't empty, and I knew that as long as Elena was with me, I was vulnerable.

She was my greatest strength, but she was also the only leverage they had to break me.

At midnight, I pulled the truck up to the heavy iron gates of St. Jude’s Sanctuary, a secluded, centuries-old monastery hidden deep within the blue-tinged ridges of the Appalachian Mountains.

The monastery was run by an order of silent monks who asked no questions and maintained no digital footprint whatsoever.

It was the only place on earth where the digital reach of Vanguard couldn't penetrate.

I carried an exhausted Elena through the heavy wooden doors, met by an elderly brother who simply nodded, his eyes filled with a deep, understanding compassion as he looked at my dirty clothes and the dark circles under my eyes.

He led us to a small, sparse room with two cot beds and a single candle burning in the corner.

I sat down on the edge of the cot, pulling Elena onto my lap, holding her tightly as the reality of what I was about to do began to settle over me.

"Mommy has to go away for a little while, Elena," I whispered, my voice breaking slightly for the very first time since this nightmare began.

She looked up at me, her large eyes filling with tears, her small fingers wrapping around the silver necklace I wore around my neck.

"No, Mommy, please don't leave me," she sobbed, burying her face in my chest. "I want to go with you. I'm scared."

"You are safe here, baby. The bad men can't find you in this place," I said, kissing the top of her head, tears finally spilling over my own eyelashes. "But the only way to make sure they never come back is for Mommy to finish this. I promise you, with everything I am, I will come back for you."

I gently unclasped the silver necklace, placing it around her small neck, the cool metal resting against her collarbone.

"As long as you have this, I am with you," I whispered.

May you like

I waited until she cried herself into a deep sleep, her small hand still clutching the silver pendant.

I stood up, wiping the tears from my face, my expression hardening into stone as I walked out of the room, leaving the only piece of my heart behind to become the monster Vanguard had created.
