Part 17

The judge didn't even retire to her chambers to deliberate.

She cleared her throat, adjusted her papers, and looked directly at our table.

"In my fifteen years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a clear-cut case of emotional abuse and parental alienation," Justice Mercer began.

The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the steady ticking of the wall clock.

"Mr. Vance, your behavior today only confirms the evidence presented by the petitioner. You lack the temperament, the stability, and the moral character to care for a child."

She turned her gaze to the documents in front of her.

"Effective immediately, sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance is awarded to her mother, Elena."

A wave of warmth rushed through my chest, making me dizzy with relief.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "I am issuing a permanent restraining order against Mr. Jason Vance, Mr. Julian Vance, and Ms. Evelyn Vance."

"They are to maintain a distance of no less than five hundred feet from the petitioner and the child at all times."

"Any violation will result in immediate arrest."

Evelyn let out a muffled gasp, sobbing into her hands.

Jason just stared blankly ahead, his eyes completely lifeless.

"As for the financial child support," the judge added, "given the pending criminal investigation into Mr. Vance’s assets, the court will place a lien on his remaining personal property to ensure the child’s future is secured."

"This court is adjourned."

The gavel fell with a loud, resounding thud.

Crack.

It was the sound of my freedom being locked into law.

Robert turned to me, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his face.

"Congratulations, Elena. You got everything."

I stood up, my legs feeling lighter than they had in years.

I didn't look back at the Vance family as they argued with their lawyer in hushed, desperate tones.

I walked out of that courtroom a completely free woman.

The storm had passed, and the wreckage belonged entirely to them.
