Part 13: The Question
Ethan proposed on Mia’s fourteenth birthday.
It wasn’t a grand gesture. He did it quietly, after Mia had gone to bed, while he and Julia were sitting on the balcony.
He didn’t get down on one knee. He simply took her hand and said:
Ethan
“I love you. And I love Mia. I want to build a life with both of you. But I also know you’ve been through enough pressure in your life. So I’m not asking you to marry me because you have to. I’m asking because I want to. Whenever you’re ready. Or never, if that’s what you choose.”
Julia looked at him for a long time.
She thought about David. About how she had once believed in forever with someone who ultimately chose to hurt her. She thought about how long it had taken her to trust again.
Then she thought about Ethan — how patient he had been, how he never tried to replace Mia’s father, how he respected her boundaries without resentment.
Julia
“I don’t know if I’m ready to get married again. But I know I don’t want to lose you.”
Ethan smiled.
Ethan
“Then we don’t have to get married. We can just keep choosing each other every day. No papers needed.”
Julia leaned her head against his shoulder.
Julia
“Give me some time. I want to talk to Mia first.”
Ethan nodded.
Ethan
“Take all the time you need.”
The next day, Julia sat down with Mia and told her about Ethan’s proposal.
Mia was quiet for a while, then asked:
Mia
“Do you love him?”
Julia
“Yes. I do.”
Mia
“And does he make you feel safe?”
Julia smiled.
Julia
“Very safe.”
Mia thought about it for a moment.
Mia
“Then I think you should say yes. Not because we need a dad. But because you deserve to be happy too.”
Julia pulled her daughter close.
Julia
“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, you know that?”
May you like
Mia grinned.
Mia
“I know. But it’s still nice to hear.”
