Part 17: David’s Return
David reached out again when Mia was in her second year of college.
This time, he didn’t ask to see her. He asked if he could write to her.
Mia showed Julia the email.
Julia
“What do you want to do?”
Mia
“I think I want to write back. Not because I want a relationship with him. But because I want to close that chapter properly.”
Julia nodded.
Julia
“Then do it on your own terms.”
Mia wrote to David. Their correspondence was careful at first. He told her about his life — how he had started over in a new city, working as a project manager for a small construction company. He told her he had been sober for four years. He didn’t ask for anything. He simply shared.
After six months of emails, Mia agreed to meet him for coffee during her winter break.
This time, she went alone.
When she came home, Julia was waiting.
Mia
“He’s different. Not completely. But enough. He didn’t try to make excuses this time. He just listened.”
Julia
“How do you feel?”
Mia thought about it.
Mia
“Peaceful. I think I finally got what I needed from him.”
Julia pulled her daughter into a hug.
Julia
“I’m proud of you. For doing this on your own terms.”
May you like
Mia smiled against her shoulder.
Mia
“Me too.”
