Part , 16: The College Years

Mia left for college when she was eighteen.

She chose a university three hours away — far enough to feel independent, but close enough to come home on weekends when she wanted to.

The night before she left, Julia helped her pack the last of her things. The house felt strangely empty already.

Mia
“I’m scared.”

Julia
“Good. That means you’re doing something important.”

Mia smiled.

Mia
“Will you be okay without me?”

Julia pulled her daughter into a hug.

Julia
“I’ll miss you every single day. But I’ll be okay. Ethan and I will be okay. And you’re going to do amazing things.”

Mia hugged her tighter.

Mia
“I love you, Mom.”

Julia
“I love you more.”

After Mia left, the house felt too quiet. Julia spent the first week walking into Mia’s empty room and standing there, just breathing in the space her daughter had left behind.

Ethan was patient with her grief. He didn’t try to fill the silence with empty words. He simply held her when she needed it and gave her space when she didn’t.

One evening, Julia looked at him and said:

Julia
“I think I finally understand what it means to be happy without feeling guilty about it.”

Ethan smiled.

Ethan
“Good. Because you deserve it.”
