Chapter 11 - The University Acceptance

|

The spring air carried the scent of blooming lilacs and the subtle, sharp electricity of impending adulthood. Noah was eighteen now, his posture carrying the quiet confidence of a young man who knew exactly who he was and where he came from.

The mail had arrived early, a heavy stack of envelopes resting on the kitchen island.

I was pouring coffee into my mug when Noah walked in, pulling a thick, cream-colored envelope from the middle of the stack. His eyes widened slightly as he read the return address.

"Well?" I asked, setting the coffee pot down. "Are you going to open it, or are you just going to stare at it until it disintegrates?"

Noah swallowed hard, breaking the seal with his thumb. He unfolded the heavy paper and scanned the first few paragraphs. A brilliant, wide smile broke across his face, instantly erasing the remaining tension of his high school years.

"I got in," he breathed, looking up at me. "I got into the architecture program. First choice."

I felt a sudden, overwhelming surge of pride that tightened my throat. I walked over and pulled him into a fierce, solid hug, lifting him slightly off the floor before setting him back down.

"I knew you would," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "Look at you. Columbia Architecture. Your grandfather would have been furious that you didn't pick finance, which means it's the absolute best choice you could have made."

Noah laughed, holding the acceptance letter tightly against his chest. "I should call Grace. She’s probably more nervous than I am."

"She’s at the center reviewing legal briefs, but call her anyway," I smiled. "She'll drop everything for this."

As Noah dialed his phone, walking out toward the porch to catch the morning sun, I looked around the kitchen. The house was changing. The toys were gone, replaced by drafting tools, design books, and the undeniable presence of a future being built on truth. He wasn't running away from his past anymore; he was stepping straight toward his destiny.
