Chapter 30 - Dinner at Maya's

|

Dr. Maya Brooks lived in a beautifully restored brownstone that smelled perpetually of lavender and old books.

It was a Friday night, and she had invited our unconventional, sprawling family over for dinner. Grace had brought a massive bowl of her infamous garlic bread, Evelyn had supplied an obscenely expensive bottle of red wine, and Noah and I had brought dessert.

We sat around Maya’s large dining table, the room filled with the warm, overlapping chaos of genuine conversation.

"I heard the Chicago developers are still furious that you rejected their contract, Noah," Maya laughed, pouring wine into Evelyn's glass.

"They'll survive," Noah replied cheerfully, reaching for a slice of garlic bread. "They can find someone else to build their glass towers."

"Integrity is a rare currency in this city," Evelyn noted, raising her glass in a subtle salute to Noah. "You spend it well."

Grace swatted my arm. "Daniel, pass the salad before you eat all the croutons."

"I am legally entitled to the croutons, Grace. It's in the trust documents," I joked, sliding the wooden bowl across the table.

I looked around the room. There was Maya, whose brilliant psychological insight had guided Noah through his darkest years. There was Evelyn, the corporate titan who had found her soul in philanthropy. There was Grace, the fierce protector who refused to let a child be treated as an asset. And there was Noah, vibrant, brilliant, and entirely unbroken.

"Are you zoning out again, Dad?" Noah asked, snapping me back to the present.

"Just taking inventory," I smiled, picking up my wine glass.

"Well, inventory says we need more wine," Grace declared.

It was a perfectly ordinary dinner. There were no hidden agendas, no whispered threats, no corporate leverage. It was just a group of people who had chosen to become a family, sharing a meal on a Friday night. It was everything Eleanor had ever wanted for him.
