Chapter 35 - The Art of Letting Go

The transition of power at the foundation was finally complete. Sarah Jenkins had officially taken over as Executive Director, and Evelyn had stepped back into her advisory role.
But there was one more transition looming.
I was in the kitchen of the river house when Grace walked in, holding a stack of legal documents. She placed them carefully on the island.
"I signed the resignation forms, Daniel," Grace said softly.
I looked at the papers. They were her official resignation documents as the co-protector of Noah’s trust.
"Are you sure about this, Grace?" I asked, putting my coffee down.
"Noah is twenty-six years old," Grace smiled, a gentle, wistful expression on her face. "He is a successful architect. He is brilliant, kind, and completely capable of managing his own affairs. The trust doesn't need a protector anymore, because the boy doesn't need protecting."
I looked at the documents, realizing the profound finality of her signature. For twenty years, she had stood as the ultimate shield against the Mercer empire. She had guarded his wealth, his safety, and his truth with an unwavering ferocity.
"You're right," I agreed, my voice thick with gratitude. "He doesn't need protecting anymore."
Grace walked over and hugged me, a strong, comforting embrace.
"I'm not leaving the family, Daniel," she reminded me, pulling back. "I'm just retiring from the paperwork. I still fully intend to burn your garlic bread and complain about the gate."

"I wouldn't have it any other way," I laughed, wiping a sudden tear from my eye.
The legal chains were finally severed. The trust was fully in Noah’s hands. The art of letting go was terrifying, but watching him fly was the greatest reward I could have ever asked for.
