Chapter 21 - DELPHINE WITHOUT HER BONUS

Delphine asked for mediation with me.
Not Willa.
Me.
I agreed once.
Neutral office.
Counsel nearby but not inside.
She looked smaller without performance.
No expensive transition contract.
No family-company role.
Still my sister.
That complicated anger.
She started:
“I’m sorry.”
“Be specific.”
She nodded.
“I took money to provoke you.”
“Yes.”
“I said things to Willa because I knew you would react.”
“Yes.”
“I slapped her because I was angry when she defended you.”
“Yes.”
“I took the payment after.”
“Yes.”
“I lied at first.”
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“You could vary.”
“No.”
Fair.
Then:
“Did you hate Willa?”
“No.”
“Did you resent her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because after Lila died, everyone treated you like you were the only person who had ever suffered.”
That surprised me.
“I lost my wife.”
“I know.”
“Willa lost her mother.”
“I know.”
“What did you lose?”
Delphine looked down.
“Mom.”
There.
Mother had turned toward me after Lila’s death?
Maybe.
Not emotionally.
Administratively.
She became obsessed with “stabilizing Everett.”
Delphine felt useful only as instrument.
Then Crestline offered role.
Mother promised significance.
Delphine accepted.
No excuse.
But motive broader.
Then:
“Did $1.15 million matter?”
“Yes.”
“Would you have done it without money?”
Long pause.
“Some of it.”
Honest.
Worse.
She already resented me.
Money professionalized cruelty.
Then:
“Do you want a relationship with Willa?”
“Not unless she does.”
Good.
“With me?”
“I don’t know.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I’m going to stop asking.”
That mattered.
Then she paid one extra thing voluntarily.
Willa’s therapy costs not covered by insurance:
Around $8,600 to date.
Could court order? Some restitution already.
She offered to reimburse remaining.
I asked Jonah.
Could accept without creating contact rights.
We did.
Not as forgiveness.
Practical consequence.
Then Delphine sold some designer jewelry? No need.
She could afford.
Then she gave me the original handwritten notebook she used to track Mother’s instructions.
Through counsel.
Evidence already copied.
One page:
Willa triggers.
Lila.
Travel.
Food.
“She kept notes?”
Mother did.
Delphine copied.
Disgusting.
I wanted to burn it.
Jonah said legal retention first.
Eventually archived.
Not home.
Then I asked:
“Why keep it?”
Delphine said:
“At first because I wanted to do it well.”
There.
Later:
“Then because I was afraid Mom would blame everything on me.”
Self-protection.
No whistleblower hero.
Then she told me something new but not twist:
Mother sometimes stopped her from going too far.
At one event Delphine suggested locking Willa upstairs briefly.
Mother said no.
Good.
Mother had boundaries.
Terrible ones.
Still.
This mattered for legal/moral scale.
They were not trying to torture Willa.
They were manipulating.
The slap escalated.
We ended mediation.
No hug.
No promise.
Outside, I felt lighter.
Not because I forgave Delphine.
Because she no longer felt mysterious.
Mystery amplifies fear.
Facts shrink it.
Then I picked Willa up from school.
She asked:
“Where you go?”
“Talked to Delphine.”
She went quiet.
“Why?”
“Adult stuff.”
“Did you yell?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Boring.”
I smiled.
May you like
“Very.”
Boring was becoming our goal.
