My stomach turned.

That was the night of the slap.

The memo itself was not sinister.

Mother had asked counsel:
“What if Everett has another outburst before vote?”

No evidence attorney knew anyone planned provocation.

Then Delphine’s phone texts arrived.
MOTHER:
He lands at 6:42. Dinner at 7:30.
DELPHINE:
What do you want me to do?
MOTHER:
Same as before. Push until he shows himself.

She is the easiest way to get him emotional.
I had to stop reading.
Jonah took the phone from my hand.
“Enough.”
I looked at him.

I walked outside instead.
