Chapter 8 - I GAVE THEM A NEW VIDEO

I should have stayed away from the family office.
I didn’t.
My name still appeared on the building access list.
I had a scheduled records inspection with counsel.
Jonah ran late.
I went in alone.
Mistake.
Mother was there.
Not supposed to be part of the inspection.
Still chair.
Still had office.
She stood in the conference room.
“You brought police into this family.”
“I brought police to a child assault.”
“You threw a bowl at your sister.”
“I know.”
“You always know after.”
I stopped.
She wanted this.
Maybe not consciously in that moment.
Maybe habit.
Provocation had become the language between us.
“Where is Jonah?”
“Coming.”
“Then leave.”
“My office.”
“Family office.”
“Your father built it.”
There.
Father.
Always.
I said:
“He also wrote the governance rules you’re trying to bypass.”
Her face changed.
“You think because you read three memos you understand what he built?”
“No.”
“You never wanted responsibility.”
“Maybe.”
“You left me to clean everything.”
“That does not give you permission to use Willa.”
She stepped closer.
“Willa was never in danger until you started making scenes.”
I laughed once.
“You paid Delphine.”
“For work.”
“She admitted she was supposed to make me angry.”
Mother’s eyes flickered.
Tiny.
Then:
“Your sister says things when frightened.”
“She slapped Willa.”
“Willa is manipulative.”
That did it.
I slammed my palm onto the conference table.
Hard.
A glass water carafe jumped.
Mother did not move.
Then I saw the red camera light in the corner.
Family-office conference recording system.
I had just given them another clip.
Not assault.
Still.
Aggressive.
I stepped back.
Mother smiled faintly.
“You see?”
I hated her for that smile.
I hated myself more for making it useful.
Jonah entered thirty seconds later.
Saw my face.
Saw Mother.
“Out.”
She said:
“This is my building.”
“Then we reschedule records production off-site.”
He took me by the elbow.
I pulled away.
Not angry at him.
“I can walk.”
Outside he said:
“What did you do?”
“Hit table.”
“Why?”
“She called Willa manipulative.”
“And?”
“And I hit table.”
He closed his eyes.
“Everett, they do not need to fake everything if you keep providing it.”
There.
The mistake had consequences immediately.
Mother added the clip to conduct review.
Her lawyer argued:
Even after being warned about aggression, Everett continues intimidating behavior.
No child present.
No threat.
Still relevant.
Miles Corbett extended my temporary recusal for another thirty days.
Not punishment for the scheme.
My behavior.
Cost.
I was furious.
Accepted.
Then Dr. Chen said:
“Tell Willa you made a mistake without making her comfort you.”
So I did.
“I got angry at Grandma in an office and hit a table.”
Willa looked concerned.
“Did table hurt?”
“No.”
“Did Grandma?”
“No.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because I’m learning what I should do when I’m angry.”
She thought.
“Walk away.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“Next time.”
“Next time.”
No hug demanded.
No:
Do you still love Daddy?
Good.
Then I called my anger counselor before diversion was even finalized.
Voluntary.
First session.
I told him:
“They’re provoking me.”
He said:
“And?”
I hated him immediately.
Good sign.
“What do you control?”
“My hands.”
“Your voice.”
“Yes.”
“Whether you enter rooms alone with people who know how to trigger you.”
That one hurt.
I had chosen that.
Then company review found the full video.
Mother had stayed calm.
No obvious provocation visible beyond words.
If someone watched thirty seconds, I looked exactly like the unstable man she described.
Context mattered.
Behavior still mine.
Then Delphine’s text became part of police investigation.
Her lawyer contacted prosecutor to discuss cooperation.
No deal yet.
Mother’s lawyer accused Delphine of lying to save herself.
Possible motive.
Need corroboration.
Then external forensic firm finally got court-authorized access to certain family-office files because Harrow Family Holdings owned the server.
Not Mother personally.
One folder:
Conduct Strategy.
Documents:
Everett response log.
Incident calendar.
Transaction timing.
Delphine reimbursements.
Media index.
And a PowerPoint deck titled:
Path to Clean Vote.
My stomach dropped when Jonah read the title aloud.
The file had been created by Mother.
Not counsel.
Not Delphine.
Mother.
The central secret was now sitting behind twelve slides.
Miles scheduled an emergency governance hearing for Monday.
No one was allowed to brief me on full contents before all parties received them simultaneously.
Fine.
May you like
I waited.
For once.
