Chapter 25 - DELPHINE’S LETTER

Willa eventually asked about Delphine.

Not to see her.

“Is she still mad?”

“I don’t know.”

“Does she hate me?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then why slap?”

Because not hating someone does not prevent cruelty.

Hard child lesson.

“Because she was angry and chose to hurt you.”

“Did money make?”

“No. Money was part of why she helped Grandma. But the slap was her choice.”

Willa nodded.

Same rule as me.

Choice.

Then Dr. Chen offered Delphine’s letter.

Willa wanted to hear.

I sat outside the therapy room this time.

Not needed inside.

Later Willa told me only one line.

“She says I didn’t make.”

“You didn’t.”

“Good.”

No more.

Delphine asked no visit.

That restraint was correct.

Then she sent restitution check for remaining therapy expenses.

Accepted.

No rights attached.

Then I received a letter from her personally.

I will not ask you to make Willa forgive me so you can forgive me.

Good.

Then:

If you ever want a relationship with me, it has to be separate from what she chooses.

Also good.

I did not reply for a week.

Then:

Understood.

Nothing more.

Sibling relationship unresolved.

Fine.

Then Mother’s third visit.

Park.

Supervised.

Thirty minutes.

Willa brought chalk.

Mother asked before taking photograph of drawing.

Willa said no.

Mother put phone away.

Good.

They drew a house.

Willa drew me.

Herself.

A tree.

Mother drew flowers at edge.

No psychological interpretation.

Just chalk.

Then Willa fell while running.

Small scrape.

Mother moved instinctively.

Stopped.

Looked at me.

I went first.

Cleaned.

Willa fine.

Mother brought tissue when I nodded.

That pause showed change better than any letter.

Then Willa asked:

“Grandma can get ice cream?”

I looked at Dr. Chen.

She nodded.

We extended ten minutes.

Not because Mother asked.

Because Willa did.

At ice cream shop, Mother paid?

Potential leverage? Ordinary. I decided I would pay.

Mother reached wallet.

I said:

“I’ve got it.”

She accepted.

No argument about money.

That mattered.

Then Willa chose two toppings.

Mother said nothing.

I almost smiled.

After visit, Willa asked:

“Can Grandma come dinner?”

My body tightened.

Dinner.

The original scene.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Bigger step.”

She accepted reluctantly.

No rush.

Then my counselor signed completion report.

Diversion nearly done.

One final session.

“What changed?”

“I still get angry.”

“Good.”

I looked at him.

“Good?”

“You were never supposed to stop anger. You were supposed to stop outsourcing responsibility for what you do with it.”

There.

That was my arc.

Mother weaponized my anger.

But she could only weaponize what I refused to govern myself.

Not blame.

Responsibility.

Then I completed diversion.

Restitution paid.

Case dismissed under terms.

No victory.

Paper.

Done.

I took Willa for pancakes.

She asked why.

May you like

“No reason.”

Best answer.
