Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO LEFT

Her name was Marisol Vega.
She had worked at the Hawthorne mansion for seven months.
Then she quit without notice.
Richard had never met her.
Claudia told everyone Marisol had stolen jewelry.
Detective Morrison found her two states away.
When Marisol agreed to speak, she asked that Mark not be present.
Richard understood why within minutes.
“She scared that little boy.”
Marisol's voice shook.
“Not by yelling all the time.”
“Sometimes it was worse when she whispered.”
Richard remained silent.
Marisol described ordinary mistakes turned into punishments.
A toy left on the stairs.
Milk spilled at breakfast.
Shoes placed near the wrong door.
Claudia demanded absolute obedience.
Mark occasionally protested.
But when Claudia became angry with him, he retreated.
“I told him once.”
Marisol looked at Richard.
“I told your son that Ethan was afraid.”
“What did Mark say?”
“He said Claudia was adjusting to motherhood.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Marisol reached into her handbag.
“I kept this because I knew someday someone might need it.”
She handed Detective Morrison an old phone.
There were text messages from Claudia.
Do not give him breakfast until he apologizes.
If Mark asks, say Ethan already ate.
Keep the back door locked.
He needs to learn that crying changes nothing.
Richard looked away.
Detective Morrison continued scrolling.
Then she stopped.
“What does this mean?”
She turned the phone toward Marisol.
One message read.
Once the evaluation is final, we won't have to organize our lives around him anymore.
Marisol swallowed.
“I asked her.”
“And?”
“She said Ethan would be going somewhere better suited for him.”
Richard's skin went cold.
“When?”
“After his fourth birthday.”
Ethan's fourth birthday was six months away.
Marisol looked directly at Richard.
“There is something else.”
Richard braced himself.
“The night I quit, I heard Claudia and a man arguing in the blue room.”
“Mark?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“I had never seen him before.”
Detective Morrison showed her photographs.
Adrian Wells.
Peter Voss.
Several Northbridge executives.
Marisol pointed instantly.
“That one.”
It was Adrian.
Richard leaned forward.
“What did you hear?”
Marisol thought carefully.
“Claudia said Mark was becoming nervous.”
“And Adrian?”
“He said it didn't matter.”
Marisol paused.
“He said once Ethan was out of the house, they could finish the transfer.”
Richard's heartbeat slowed.
“What transfer?”
“I don't know.”
Then she remembered something else.
“He said one name.”
“What name?”
Marisol looked at him.
“Whitaker Industries.”
Richard stopped breathing.

This had never been only about Ethan's trust.
Claudia had been reaching toward Richard's company too.
