Chapter 14 - THE DOOR

For the next three weeks, Richard built Ethan's days around ordinary things.

Breakfast at seven-thirty.

A walk after lunch.

Storybooks.

Toy trucks.

Warm socks.

Doors that were never locked against him.

At first, Ethan asked permission for everything.

“Can I sit here?”

“Can I drink this?”

“Can I take this toy upstairs?”

Richard answered the same way every time.

“Yes.”

One evening, Richard found Ethan standing beside the back door.

The boy stared through the glass.

“What's wrong?”

Ethan pointed outside.

“It's dark.”

“I know.”

“Am I allowed inside?”

Richard knelt.

“You are always allowed inside.”

Ethan studied his face.

“Even if I spill something?”

Richard could barely breathe.

“Especially then.”

Ethan wrapped his arms around his grandfather's neck.

Richard held him until the boy let go.

The criminal investigation continued.

Claudia's attorney tried to portray Adrian as the mastermind.

Adrian claimed Claudia planned everything.

Mark admitted financial misconduct but denied knowing the full scheme.

Then Detective Morrison discovered an encrypted audio file on Claudia's laptop.

The conversation was between Claudia and Adrian.

Richard listened beside Arthur.

Adrian's voice came first.

What happens if Richard changes the trust?

Claudia laughed.

He won't.

How do you know?

Because Richard thinks Mark is weak, not dangerous.

A pause followed.

Then Claudia said something Richard would never forget.

Men like Richard only look where they expect to find a threat.

Arthur stopped the recording.

“She studied you.”

Richard nodded.

Claudia had understood his blind spot.

He watched business rivals.

Lawyers.

Competitors.

He never watched his own family closely enough.

Arthur restarted the audio.

Adrian asked.

And the kid?

Claudia answered.

Once Ethan is placed, Mark will fall apart.

Then he signs whatever I put in front of him.

Richard closed his eyes.

The scheme depended on Mark being exactly who Sarah feared he might become.

Afraid.

Passive.

Easy to control.

But Claudia had made one mistake.

She thought Richard's love for his son would stop him from exposing Mark.

She was wrong.

The next morning, Richard called Detective Morrison.

“I'll testify to everything.”

“Even Mark's involvement?”

May you like

Richard looked at Ethan playing across the room.

“Especially Mark's involvement.”
