Chapter 8 - CLAUDIA STRIKES BACK

By morning, Claudia's version of the story had reached local television.

She did not appear on camera.

Her attorney did.

He described Richard as a wealthy, controlling patriarch who had assaulted Claudia and removed a child from his father.

He claimed the backyard incident had been exaggerated.

He called the trust investigation a family financial dispute.

Richard watched five minutes before turning off the television.

Arthur paced behind him.

“This is going to get ugly.”

“It already is.”

“You need to be careful.”

“I told the police I slapped her.”

“I know.”

“I shouldn't have done it.”

Arthur looked at him.

Richard stared out the window.

“I saw Ethan shaking.”

“That explains your reaction.”

“It doesn't excuse it.”

Arthur nodded.

“That is exactly what you say if you're asked.”

Richard turned.

“But I will not apologize for taking that boy to a hospital.”

“You shouldn't.”

A temporary custody hearing was scheduled for the following morning.

Mark petitioned to have Ethan returned.

Richard could hardly believe it.

After everything that had happened, his son still wanted the boy back in the same household.

When Richard confronted him outside the courthouse, Mark looked desperate.

“Claudia won't be there.”

“That isn't enough.”

“I'm his father.”

“Then act like one.”

“I can change.”

Richard studied him.

“You've had three years.”

Mark's face tightened.

“You think you're perfect?”

“No.”

“You were barely home when I was a kid.”

Richard absorbed the accusation.

It was true.

He had built Whitaker Industries while Mark was young.

He missed school plays.

Baseball games.

Two birthdays.

He had spent decades convincing himself that providing money was the same as being present.

Maybe that was where Mark learned to mistake comfort for care.

Richard nodded slowly.

“You're right.”

Mark looked surprised.

“I failed you in ways I didn't understand at the time.”

Richard stepped closer.

“But my failures do not give you permission to repeat them with Ethan.”

Mark looked away.

Inside the courtroom, Claudia sat behind her attorney.

She wore a pale gray suit.

Her cheek showed no mark now.

She did not look at Richard.

But she smiled when Mark entered.

Richard noticed.

So did Arthur.

Then Dana arrived carrying a thick folder.

She whispered something to the county attorney.

The county attorney's expression changed.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

Richard expected the hearing to focus on the backyard.

Instead, the county attorney rose.

“Your Honor, before custody is addressed, the county has received new evidence regarding an effort to have Ethan Whitaker classified as severely behaviorally impaired.”

Claudia stopped smiling.

The attorney continued.

“And we have reason to believe that effort was connected to access to the child's protected financial assets.”

Mark turned toward his wife.

For the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.
