control

Chapter 12 - THE REAL TARGET

Whitaker Industries was worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Richard had built it from a regional construction supplier into a national infrastructure company.

Mark owned shares.

Ethan would inherit more.

But neither Mark nor Claudia could control it.

Not while Richard was alive.

Arthur spent two days examining corporate filings.

Then he found the connection.

Adrian Wells had quietly purchased debt from three companies closely tied to Whitaker Industries.

Nothing illegal about that.

But someone had also been acquiring voting proxies from small shareholders.

Richard studied the numbers.

“This isn't enough to control the company.”

“No.”

Arthur tapped the screen.

“But combine it with Mark's shares…”

Mark stared.

“No.”

Arthur continued.

“And the voting rights attached to the Ethan trust when certain incapacity conditions are met.”

Richard's face hardened.

“There it is.”

The behavioral diagnosis was not just about cash.

If Ethan were declared unable to participate in future decisions, a court-appointed representative could eventually vote on his behalf.

Someone had been preparing to become that representative.

Claudia.

Mark leaned against the conference table.

“She told me she hated the company.”

Richard gave a humorless laugh.

“She hated not owning it.”

Detective Morrison arrived with more news.

Adrian Wells had disappeared.

His apartment was empty.

His car had been found at a train station.

But he made one mistake.

He used a secondary credit card.

A purchase appeared that morning outside Richmond.

Police located him at a motel.

When detectives entered the room, they found financial records and a burner phone.

Adrian asked for an attorney.

Then he asked for a deal.

Richard was not allowed to hear the interrogation.

But by sunset, Detective Morrison called.

“He's talking.”

Richard stood beside Ethan's bedroom window.

“What is he saying?”

“He says Claudia created the plan.”

Richard wasn't surprised.

Then Morrison continued.

“But he says Mark knew more than he's admitted.”

Richard looked toward the hallway.

Mark was downstairs for a supervised visit.

“What does that mean?”

“Adrian claims Mark knew Claudia wanted control of the voting shares.”

Richard felt something inside him harden again.

“Does he have proof?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“When?”

“Seven months ago.”

Before the worst documented punishments.

Before the forged medical emails.

Before Ethan spent nine hours outside.

Richard gripped the phone.

“What does Mark say on the recording?”

Morrison hesitated.

“He says, ‘Do whatever you need to do, Claudia.’”

Richard said nothing.

May you like

Morrison continued.

“And then he says, ‘Just make sure my father never finds out.’”
