Chapter 17 - THE NIGHT SARAH DIED

Richard drove to Mark's apartment himself.

Mark opened the door looking terrified.

“What happened?”

Richard demanded.

Mark sat down.

“Sarah had a headache that night.”

Richard remembered.

Sarah had complained about headaches before.

“What did you do?”

“She said it was the worst headache of her life.”

Richard's stomach twisted.

“And?”

“She wanted to go to the hospital.”

Richard went still.

Mark stared at the floor.

“We had been arguing.”

“About what?”

“Money.”

Richard already knew what came next.

“You didn't take her.”

Mark began shaking.

“I told her she was being dramatic.”

Richard stared at his son.

“How long?”

“Forty minutes.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“She collapsed before I called 911.”

For several seconds, the room disappeared.

Richard remembered the hospital.

The doctors.

Mark sobbing in the hallway.

Baby Ethan being carried by a nurse.

The words nobody could understand.

She's gone.

Richard opened his eyes.

“Why did Claudia know?”

“I told her.”

“When?”

“A few months after we met.”

“And she used it against you.”

Mark nodded.

“She said if you knew, you would hate me.”

Richard looked at him.

“Did the doctors ever say the delay caused Sarah's death?”

“No.”

“Could they have saved her?”

“They said maybe not.”

Richard exhaled slowly.

Mark was crying now.

“I didn't kill her.”

Richard said nothing.

“But I failed her.”

Mark covered his face.

“Just like I failed Ethan.”

Richard looked at his son and finally saw the complete pattern.

Mark did not attack.

He delayed.

He minimized.

He avoided.

He waited for problems to disappear.

And terrible things happened while he waited.

Richard sat opposite him.

“Sarah's death was not murder.”

Mark looked up.

“But what you did matters.”

“I know.”

“You have spent two years hiding from that night.”

Mark nodded.

“And Claudia learned that fear could control you.”

Another nod.

Richard stood.

“What happens next is up to you.”

“Are you telling Ethan?”

“Not now.”

Richard reached the door.

Mark spoke.

“Dad.”

Richard turned.

“Do you hate me?”

Richard looked at his son for a long moment.

“No.”

Mark broke down.

Richard continued.

“But loving you no longer means protecting you from consequences.”

Then he walked out.

Outside, Richard opened Claudia's letter again.

For the first time, her threat no longer frightened him.

The secret had lost its power the moment Mark told the truth.
