Chapter 12 - The Brother Behind Glass

The underground corridor smelled of seawater, oil, and overheated electrical wiring.

Emergency lights flashed along the walls as Naomi and Hale descended deeper beneath Blackwater Port.

Daniel’s locator pulsed on Hale’s handheld screen.

Two hundred feet ahead.

Then one hundred eighty.

Then one hundred sixty.

Naomi forced herself not to run.

Every corner could hold a guard.

Every door could conceal an explosive.

The walls shook as water flooded the dry dock above them.

Vanessa had interrupted Arthur’s communications, but the backup system would activate within minutes.

“Naomi,” Hale said quietly.

“Not now.”

“There may not be another opportunity.”

“You have had six years of opportunities.”

“I know.”

She stopped and turned.

“Do you?”

Hale’s face was marked by exhaustion and old regret.

“I knew your mother.”

The corridor seemed to contract around her.

“Arthur said she worked for the Dominion.”

“She infiltrated it.”

“You recruited her?”

“No. She recruited me.”

Naomi stared at him.

“Elena Reyes was the first person to understand what Victor Ward had built. She worked in international relief logistics. When weapons began appearing in food shipments, she traced them to Dominion ports.”

“Blackwater.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she go to the authorities?”

“She did. The investigator she contacted was Arthur Whitmore.”

Naomi closed her eyes.

Her mother had walked directly into the enemy’s hands.

Hale continued.

“Arthur offered her a place inside the organization. He believed she could be useful. She accepted so she could collect evidence.”

“And you helped her.”

“I was young. I believed the Dominion still served a necessary purpose.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because shame does not change the truth.”

Naomi looked toward Daniel’s locator.

“We don’t have time for your shame.”

“Your mother made me promise to protect you and Daniel.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

The word followed them as they moved again.

At the next intersection, two guards appeared.

Hale shot one.

Naomi disarmed the second and slammed him against the wall.

They reached a reinforced glass door.

Beyond it was the server level.

Rows of black machines filled the vast room. Blue lights blinked across them like stars.

At the center stood the glass-walled chamber from the video.

Daniel was inside.

Alone now.

His hands were bound to the chair.

Naomi ran toward him.

“Daniel!”

His head lifted.

The glass muffled his voice, but she saw her name on his lips.

She reached the chamber door.

No handle.

A biometric panel glowed beside it.

Hale placed his palm against the scanner.

ACCESS DENIED.

Naomi tried.

BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED.

SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

“Hale?”

“It wants a council member.”

He pressed his palm again.

ACCESS DENIED—CREDENTIALS REVOKED.

Daniel leaned toward the glass.

He pointed upward.

A camera.

Arthur was watching.

The loudspeaker activated.

“Marcus has lost his privileges.”

Naomi looked toward the ceiling.

“Come down here.”

Arthur laughed.

“I have no reason to.”

“Then I will tear this place apart around you.”

“That would kill your brother.”

The server lights changed from blue to red.

A new countdown appeared on the glass.

02:18:33.

Time to demolition.

The flood had interrupted the original sequence, but not stopped it.

Hale searched the security panel.

“We need another council biometric.”

“Lucian.”

“He is upstairs with Adrian.”

“And Celia?”

“Unconscious.”

Daniel tapped the glass.

Naomi looked at him.

He began using their childhood code again.

Five taps.

Three.

Nine.

She checked the numerical file.

Line 539.

Hale found it.

USE ARTHUR’S BLOOD.

Naomi looked toward the ceiling.

Daniel had expected Arthur to come to the server room.

But Arthur remained in the bunker.

“How do we force him down?” she asked.

Daniel tapped again.

Line 118.

HE WILL COME FOR ADRIAN.

Naomi understood.

Adrian was not merely Arthur’s heir.

He was bait.

She activated the radio.

“Adrian, where are you?”

Static.

Then his voice.

“Executive level.”

“Is Arthur there?”

“No. We found the bunker empty.”

Hale frowned.

“Then where is he?”

Adrian’s breathing sounded heavy.

“Lucian says there is a command room above the dry dock.”

Naomi looked at the port map.

The command room sat between Warehouse Two and the administration roof.

“Vanessa.”

She changed channels.

“Vanessa, respond.”

No answer.

“Vanessa?”

Static crackled.

Then a man spoke.

“Miss Sterling is with me.”

Arthur.

Adrian swore over the radio.

Naomi’s hand tightened around the device.

“Let her go.”

“She flooded my dock.”

“She saved three hundred people.”

“She inconvenienced me.”

Arthur sounded almost amused.

“Bring Adrian to the command room. Marcus and Lucian as well.”

“What about Daniel?”

“He remains where he is.”

Naomi looked through the glass.

Daniel shook his head.

He did not want her to leave.

Arthur continued.

“Celia may join us if she survives. Eleanor already knows the way.”

Naomi froze.

“What does that mean?”

A second camera feed appeared on the server room wall.

Eleanor stood inside the command room with her hands raised.

Celia lay on the floor beside her, still unconscious.

Vanessa knelt near the control panel.

Arthur held a pistol behind her head.

He had captured all three.

“How?” Hale whispered.

Arthur answered as though he heard him.

“There are tunnels you never discovered, Marcus.”

Lucian’s voice came through Adrian’s radio.

“He is gathering the council.”

Exactly as Daniel had planned.

But Arthur controlled the room.

Naomi looked at her brother through the glass.

“I will come back.”

Daniel shook his head fiercely.

She placed her palm against the barrier.

For six years, she had imagined touching his face again.

Now only three inches of reinforced glass separated them.

“I did not survive this long to lose you tonight.”

Daniel leaned forward until his forehead touched the opposite side.

His lips formed two words.

I’m sorry.

Naomi’s eyes burned.

“No.”

He tapped the glass once.

Then twice.

Then one final sequence.

Hale checked the file.

Line 712.

DO NOT SAVE ME. SAVE THEM.

Naomi looked toward the thousands of servers.

The Dominion records.

The hostages.

The names of innocent witnesses and operatives.

Daniel had spent six years building a weapon precise enough to destroy the guilty without sacrificing everyone else.

He believed his own life was an acceptable price.

She did not.

Naomi turned toward Hale.

“We bring Arthur down here.”

“He will not leave the command room voluntarily.”

“Then we take the command room.”

Hale checked his pistol.

“Adrian and Lucian are approaching from the north stairwell.”

“We approach from below.”

“There is no direct route.”

Daniel tapped the glass urgently.

Naomi checked the next line.

MAINTENANCE SHAFT BENEATH FLOOR PANEL C.

She located a metal panel near the third server row.

Hale lifted it.

A narrow vertical shaft descended into darkness.

“Where does it lead?”

Daniel tapped another code.

COMMAND ROOM COOLING SYSTEM.

Naomi looked at Hale.

“You knew my brother was clever.”

“I never knew he was suicidal.”

“He isn’t suicidal.”

“He built a system requiring him to die.”

“He built a system requiring someone to remain.”

Hale understood.

“No.”

Naomi removed her weapon and checked the ammunition.

“You stay with Daniel.”

“Absolutely not.”

“You can activate the system from inside the chamber.”

“And die in his place?”

“If necessary.”

Hale stared at her.

“That is exactly what Daniel does not want.”

“This is not about what he wants.”

“It is his choice.”

“It is my brother.”

“And you do not own his life.”

The words stopped her.

They echoed Adrian’s words to Celia.

Stop speaking about me like property.

Love did not create ownership.

But love also did not require obedience to a death wish.

Naomi looked through the glass.

Daniel watched them, unable to hear every word but understanding enough.

She touched the barrier again.

“We decide together.”

His expression softened.

Hale entered the maintenance shaft first.

Naomi followed.

They crawled through darkness beneath the server room, guided only by a small flashlight. Hot air rushed around them.

The shaft angled upward.

Voices became audible above.

Arthur.

Adrian.

Lucian.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

The Dominion’s remaining council and the heirs they had manipulated were gathering in one room.

Naomi reached a grated opening.

Through it, she saw the command center.

Arthur stood beside the demolition controls.

Vanessa knelt near the flooded dock monitor.

Eleanor remained near Celia.

Adrian and Lucian entered through the north door.

Arthur smiled.

“Four council members.”

He looked toward the grate, directly at Naomi’s hiding place.

“And one ghost beneath the floor.”

Naomi froze.

Arthur pressed a button.

Steel shutters slammed across every exit.

Gas began pouring into the maintenance shaft.

Hale coughed.

Arthur’s voice filled the confined space.

“Did you truly believe Daniel was the only person who knew about that passage?”

Naomi kicked the grate.

It did not move.

Arthur continued.

“Bring me the real drive, Marcus.”

Hale looked at Naomi.

“The real drive is inside Daniel’s chamber.”

She understood.

The decoy from Richard’s briefcase had never mattered.

Daniel himself had hidden the final key.

Arthur raised his pistol toward Adrian.

“You have thirty seconds.”

Hale began forcing the grate with both hands.

It held.

Gas thickened around them.

Naomi’s vision blurred.

Above, Vanessa saw something beneath the floor.

Her eyes met Naomi’s through the grate.

Vanessa did not react.

She slowly moved one hand toward the control panel beside her.

Arthur counted.

“Ten.”

Vanessa pressed a switch.

The floodgate alarms screamed again.

Water pressure surged through the cooling system.

The maintenance grate exploded upward.

Naomi and Hale fell into the command room as water and steam burst beneath them.

Gunfire erupted.

Eleanor dragged Celia behind the console.

Adrian attacked Arthur.

Lucian reached for the demolition controls.

Vanessa seized his arm.

Naomi rolled across the floor and raised her weapon.

Arthur threw Adrian aside and aimed at Vanessa.

Naomi fired.

The bullet struck Arthur’s hand.

His pistol spun away.

Hale tackled Lucian.

Adrian pinned Arthur against the console.

For one breathless moment, the room belonged to them.

Then every screen turned red.

AUTOMATIC DEMOLITION INITIATED.

00:09:59.

Arthur began laughing.

“You stopped me too late.”

The entire port shook.

Naomi looked toward the screen showing Daniel behind glass.

Ten minutes.

Ten minutes before Blackwater collapsed into the ocean.

Daniel tapped one final message against the chamber wall.

Hale translated it aloud.

“There is only one way to stop the demolition.”

Naomi stared at the screen.

Daniel lifted his bound hands toward the biometric reader inside his chamber.

The message appeared on the main monitor.

ACTIVATE THE RELEASE.

The system would expose the Dominion.

It would save the hostages.

It would disable the demolition network.

But someone still had to remain inside the sealed server chamber until the upload finished.

Estimated upload time appeared.

Eleven minutes.

The port would explode in ten.

Naomi looked at Daniel.

He smiled at her through the camera.

Then he mouthed the words she had feared since the moment she learned he was alive.

May you like

Goodbye, Nomi.
