Chapter 5 - The Daughter in the Contract

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“What did he say?”

No one answered.

Rain hammered the roof of the disabled sedan.

The man in the gray suit stood calmly beyond the windshield while armed men surrounded the vehicle. Their rifles remained lowered, but their fingers rested near the triggers.

Naomi looked at Richard.

“The daughter you promised?”

Richard’s face was rigid.

“Do not open the doors.”

“You don’t control the doors anymore,” Adrian said.

He pressed the lock switch.

Nothing happened.

The stranger tapped twice on the glass.

“Richard, we have already lost too much time.”

Vanessa grabbed her father’s arm.

“Who is he?”

Richard pulled away from her.

That small rejection told Naomi everything.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her voice became quieter.

“Dad?”

Richard finally looked at her.

“His name is Lucian Vale.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“Vale Maritime.”

Lucian gave a small bow from outside, as though he had heard her.

Vale Maritime was one of Whitmore Global’s largest competitors. Publicly, the company transported oil, machinery, and agricultural products.

Privately, intelligence agencies had suspected it of moving illegal weapons for more than a decade.

No investigation had ever produced charges.

Naomi understood why.

Lucian Vale was not merely connected to the Dominion.

He was the Dominion.

Vanessa stared at him through the glass.

“What does he want with me?”

Richard said nothing.

Lucian’s men approached the doors.

Naomi checked the pistol Hale had given her.

Four rounds.

Too many enemies.

No clear exit.

She looked at the armored sedan’s interior. Reinforced glass. Steel doors. Emergency release beneath the rear seat.

Lucian controlled the electronic locks, but not the manual system.

Naomi slid her hand toward the release.

Lucian spoke through a portable amplifier.

“You have something that belongs to me, Miss Reyes.”

Naomi froze.

He knew exactly where she was sitting.

“The drive,” Adrian said.

Lucian smiled.

“The drive is merely information. Information can be copied. Miss Sterling, however, is irreplaceable.”

Vanessa’s fear turned to anger.

“I don’t belong to anyone.”

Lucian’s gaze moved toward her.

“Your father disagreed.”

She turned on Richard.

“What did you do?”

Richard looked older than he had an hour earlier.

“Years ago, Sterling Hotels faced bankruptcy.”

Vanessa shook her head. “That never happened.”

“Because Lucian provided financing.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“The money came with conditions.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You used your daughter as collateral?”

“It was not phrased that way.”

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound was sharp inside the vehicle.

Richard did not react.

Tears filled Vanessa’s eyes.

“You sold me?”

“I protected the family.”

“You sold me.”

“I believed I could repay him before the condition was enforced.”

“What condition?”

Richard looked toward Lucian.

“That you would marry into the Vale family.”

Vanessa laughed, but the sound was broken.

“I’m engaged to Adrian.”

“That arrangement was supposed to make you untouchable.”

Eleanor turned toward Richard.

“You intended to use my grandson’s name as protection from a contract you concealed from us.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

Adrian opened his door.

Naomi grabbed him.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m ending this.”

“With four rifles aimed at your head?”

“He wants Vanessa alive.”

“That doesn’t mean he needs you alive.”

Lucian tapped the window again.

“Thirty seconds.”

Naomi bent toward the floor.

She found the emergency release beneath the seat and pulled.

A mechanical click sounded inside the rear door.

One manual lock had opened.

She whispered, “When I move, stay down.”

Adrian glanced toward the men outside.

“What’s the plan?”

“Make them think they have control.”

“That’s not a plan.”

“It is when arrogant men are involved.”

Naomi handed the briefcase to Eleanor.

“Protect this.”

Eleanor accepted it.

Naomi turned toward Vanessa.

“Remove your earrings.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“What?”

“The diamonds will reflect the headlights. Take them off.”

Vanessa obeyed, too frightened to argue.

Naomi pointed toward the floor.

“When the door opens, throw them beneath the vehicle on the right.”

“Why?”

“Because one of Lucian’s men is wearing night-vision optics.”

Adrian looked outside.

“How can you tell?”

“The lens has a green filter. A sudden reflection at close range will blind him.”

Vanessa held both earrings tightly.

Naomi opened the rear door.

The men raised their rifles.

She stepped out with her hands visible.

Rain soaked her uniform immediately.

Lucian studied her.

“The dead woman.”

“People keep calling me that.”

“You have become difficult to kill.”

“So I’ve been told.”

His eyes moved over her stance.

“You were trained well.”

“Better than your men.”

One of the guards stepped forward.

Lucian raised a hand, stopping him.

“I admire confidence.”

“You admire obedience.”

“Obedience is more useful.”

Naomi looked toward the vehicles blocking the road.

“Let them leave.”

“Give me the drive.”

“You said it can be copied.”

“It can.”

“Then you don’t need it.”

Lucian smiled.

“I need to know whether Richard has already copied it.”

Naomi glanced at Sterling.

“Has he?”

Richard did not answer.

Lucian sighed.

“This is why I prefer contracts. Conversations allow too much dishonesty.”

He nodded toward the sedan.

“Vanessa will come with me. The rest of you may leave.”

“No,” Adrian said from inside.

Lucian’s expression remained pleasant.

“You misunderstand your role, Mr. Whitmore. You were a shield. An unsuccessful one.”

Vanessa appeared behind Naomi.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Lucian looked almost sympathetic.

“Your father signed the agreement.”

“I didn’t.”

“No, but your inheritance, shares, and family trusts are bound to it.”

“I don’t care about the money.”

“You will.”

Vanessa stepped into the rain.

For the first time since Naomi had known her, the wealthy heiress looked small.

Not because her gown was torn or her makeup had run.

Because she had finally discovered that all the power she believed belonged to her had always been controlled by someone else.

Lucian extended his hand.

“Come peacefully, and no one dies.”

Vanessa looked at Naomi.

The hatred in her eyes had disappeared.

In its place was a question she was too proud to ask.

Help me.

Naomi gave the smallest nod.

Vanessa threw the diamond earrings.

They skidded beneath the right-side vehicle.

The night-vision guard looked down instinctively.

The diamonds caught the headlights.

He recoiled, blinded.

Naomi moved.

She struck the nearest rifle barrel upward as it fired. The bullet vanished into the trees.

Adrian threw open the driver’s door and rammed his shoulder into a second guard.

Eleanor fired through the open window.

A bullet struck the tire of the vehicle blocking the road.

The tire exploded.

Naomi twisted the first guard’s rifle away and used its stock against his jaw.

Lucian did not run.

He stood beneath the umbrella and watched.

That calmness warned her.

Something else was coming.

She aimed the rifle at his chest.

“Tell your men to lower their weapons.”

Lucian smiled.

“Naomi.”

A red laser dot appeared on Vanessa’s forehead.

Sniper.

Naomi stopped.

Another laser settled on Adrian’s chest.

A third appeared over Eleanor’s heart.

Lucian spread his hands.

“You see? Confidence is admirable. Preparation is superior.”

Naomi lowered the rifle.

His men recovered.

One struck Adrian behind the knee and forced him down.

Another pulled Vanessa away.

Richard remained inside the sedan, unmoving.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Do something!”

He looked away.

That hurt her more than the armed men.

Lucian approached Naomi.

Up close, he appeared to be in his early fifties. His dark hair was touched with silver, and no rain reached his tailored suit beneath the umbrella.

He took the rifle from her hands.

“Daniel said you would come.”

Naomi’s pulse jumped.

“You’ve spoken to him.”

“Yesterday.”

“Where is he?”

“At Blackwater Port.”

“Alive?”

“For now.”

She wanted to attack him.

The lasers prevented her.

“What do you want from us?”

“Not us. You.”

He glanced toward Vanessa.

“She was always part of the contract. You are a recent complication.”

Lucian motioned toward the briefcase.

A guard removed it from Eleanor.

Lucian opened it and lifted Daniel’s photograph.

“Your brother has spent six years building something for me.”

“What?”

“A system capable of identifying every compromised agent, official, judge, and executive in our network.”

“Why would he help you?”

“He didn’t.”

Lucian’s smile faded.

“He built it to destroy us.”

Hope rose painfully inside Naomi.

Daniel had not surrendered.

Even after six years, he was still fighting.

“The drive contains the encryption key,” Lucian continued. “Daniel hid it inside Richard’s financial records.”

Richard stepped from the sedan.

“You said the drive contained evidence against my company.”

“It does.”

“You used me.”

Lucian looked amused.

“I used everyone.”

Vanessa struggled against the man holding her.

“You will never control the Whitmore family.”

Lucian looked at Adrian.

“Perhaps not.”

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“But the Whitmore family is already controlled.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

Lucian reached into his coat and removed a telephone.

He turned the screen toward them.

A live video showed Whitmore House.

Colonel Hale knelt in the ballroom with his hands bound.

Behind him stood Celia Ward.

She held a pistol against his head.

Eleanor whispered, “Celia.”

The housekeeper smiled into the camera.

“Good evening, Mrs. Whitmore.”

Eleanor’s hand trembled.

“Why?”

Celia’s eyes became cold.

“Because your husband made me a promise thirty-two years ago.”

Lucian ended the call.

Naomi looked at him.

“What promise?”

“That the Dominion would one day belong to her son.”

Adrian frowned.

“Her son?”

Lucian turned toward him.

The smile returned.

“You, Mr. Whitmore.”

The rain seemed to stop.

Adrian stared at Lucian.

“My mother died when I was born.”

“No,” Eleanor whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor’s face had gone gray.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Grandmother?”

She could not meet his eyes.

May you like

Lucian folded Daniel’s photograph and placed it inside his coat.

“Celia Ward is your mother.”
