Chapter 4 - The Rescue That Wasn’t

The officer raised his rifle.
Colonel Hale fired first.
His bullet struck the chandelier chain above the doorway.
The massive crystal fixture crashed between the officers and the guests.
Glass exploded across the marble floor.
“Move!” Hale shouted.
Panic erupted again.
Guests who had just begun standing dropped behind tables and overturned chairs. Police officers shouted contradictory commands from the ballroom entrance.
Some sounded genuinely confused.
Others began firing.
Naomi grabbed the open briefcase.
Richard seized the opposite handle.
“Let go,” she said.
“That drive belongs to me.”
“It contains my brother’s location.”
“It contains information capable of destroying governments.”
“Then we agree it shouldn’t stay with you.”
A bullet struck the table beside them.
Naomi pulled hard, tore the case from Richard’s grip, and dragged him behind a marble pillar.
Adrian shielded Vanessa as they moved toward the hidden passage.
Eleanor remained near the staircase, calmly directing guests toward the servants’ corridor.
“This way!” she commanded. “Stay low and do not run.”
Even under gunfire, people obeyed her.
Naomi looked toward the entrance.
The officer with the serpent tattoo was moving along the wall, searching for someone.
Not Richard.
Not the briefcase.
His eyes settled on Naomi.
He smiled.
She knew him.
Not personally.
But she had seen his photograph in Daniel’s old files.
Special Agent Grant Mercer.
At the time, Mercer had been a promising young federal investigator assigned to internal security. He had attended Daniel’s memorial service. He had stood beside Naomi and offered condolences while pretending Daniel was dead.
Now he wore a state police tactical vest and carried a rifle.
“Naomi Reyes!” Mercer shouted across the ballroom. “Put down the case.”
She tightened her grip.
“You first.”
His smile widened.
“You still sound like your brother.”
“Where is he?”
“Waiting for you.”
“Then call off your men.”
“I didn’t bring all of them.”
Confusion moved across his face as another officer opened fire on one of the masked attackers still struggling near the floor.
Naomi understood.
There were multiple teams.
Real police officers had arrived with compromised officers hidden among them.
The Dominion had infiltrated the rescue operation, but not controlled it completely.
Chaos was their cover.
Hale appeared beside Naomi.
“East terrace.”
“Eleanor and Adrian?”
“They’re moving through the passage.”
“Vanessa?”
“With them.”
Naomi looked toward Richard.
“You’re coming.”
He laughed once. “You plan to kidnap me?”
“I plan to keep you alive until you tell me everything.”
Mercer fired.
Naomi pushed Richard down.
The bullet struck the marble pillar.
Hale returned fire, forcing Mercer behind the doorway.
Naomi ran toward the east gallery, dragging Richard with her.
They entered the hidden passage moments before gunfire tore through the wall.
Adrian waited inside with Vanessa and Eleanor.
Vanessa’s face twisted when she saw Naomi carrying the briefcase.
“You’re stealing it.”
Naomi continued walking.
“If you still believe this is about theft, you’re even more dangerous than I thought.”
Adrian caught Vanessa’s arm before she could follow.
“Stop.”
She stared at him.
“You’re defending her again.”
“She saved us twice.”
“She lied to us for a year.”
“So did your father.”
Richard’s expression hardened. “Careful.”
Adrian turned on him.
“Did you know armed men might come tonight?”
“No.”
“Did you know Naomi’s brother was alive?”
Richard did not answer.
Adrian’s face changed.
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Dad had reasons.”
Naomi glanced back.
“You don’t even know what his reasons were.”
“He’s my father.”
“That doesn’t make him innocent.”
“And your brother being imprisoned doesn’t make you innocent.”
Naomi stopped.
The passage fell silent except for distant gunfire.
Vanessa stepped closer, emboldened by Naomi’s stillness.
“You came into our home under a false name. You watched us. You searched through our things.”
“I cleaned your rooms.”
“You listened.”
“You spoke about confidential business while I was standing beside you because you assumed the help was too stupid to understand.”
Vanessa’s cheeks reddened.
Naomi continued.
“I did not enter Whitmore House because of you. I came because your father held meetings here with men connected to my brother’s disappearance.”
Vanessa looked toward Richard.
“Tell her she’s wrong.”
Richard said nothing.
The silence struck harder than a confession.
Vanessa’s anger faltered.
Eleanor moved between them.
“This family argument may be fascinating, but armed men are currently tearing apart my ballroom.”
She led them through the passage and down a narrow stone staircase.
At the bottom waited a reinforced door.
Eleanor entered a code.
The lock released.
Beyond it was a garage hidden beneath the east wing. Antique cars lined the walls beneath dust covers.
At the center sat a black armored sedan.
Adrian stared at his grandmother.
“You have an armored car?”
“I was married to your grandfather for fifty-one years. Of course I have an armored car.”
Hale opened the rear door.
“We have less than two minutes before Mercer blocks the main roads.”
Naomi placed the briefcase inside.
Richard stopped beside the vehicle.
“I’m not leaving with him.”
Hale looked at him.
“You should worry less about me and more about who gave the attackers your daughter’s schedule.”
Richard froze.
Vanessa looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
“The engagement party guest list was private,” Hale said. “The staff schedule was changed this morning. The briefcase was not supposed to leave your office. Yet the attackers knew all three details.”
Richard’s face became cold.
“Someone close to the family informed them.”
Vanessa’s voice shook. “Who?”
Hale looked at Adrian.
Adrian stiffened.
“You think it was me?”
“No,” Hale replied. “I think the leak came through your company.”
Whitmore Global controlled ports, freight networks, and private security contracts across North America. If the Dominion needed to move weapons or prisoners without detection, the company’s logistics systems would be invaluable.
Eleanor understood immediately.
“That is why Naomi took the housekeeping job.”
Naomi nodded.
“Someone used the estate’s private network to transmit coded shipping manifests. I traced several messages to this property, but I couldn’t identify the sender.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You were investigating us.”
“I was investigating someone inside the house.”
“And you never considered telling me?”
“Would you have believed the maid?”
The question silenced him.
A pounding sound echoed from the staircase door.
They had been found.
Hale pointed toward the sedan.
“Inside.”
Everyone climbed into the vehicle.
Adrian took the driver’s seat. Eleanor sat beside him. Naomi, Richard, and Vanessa entered the rear. Hale remained outside.
Naomi lowered the window.
“What are you doing?”
“Buying time.”
“No.”
“That wasn’t a request.”
She opened the door again.
“You said Daniel is alive. You’re going to explain everything.”
“I will.”
“When?”
“When you reach the safe house.”
“You’re coming with us.”
Hale gave her the same look he had used before dangerous operations.
Calm.
Absolute.
Infuriating.
“Protect the drive.”
The pounding stopped.
Naomi heard metal being placed against the door.
Explosive charge.
“Hale!”
He slammed the armored door closed.
Adrian started the engine.
The hidden garage door opened onto a narrow service road behind the mansion.
The reinforced staircase door exploded inward.
Hale fired into the smoke as Adrian accelerated away.
Vanessa twisted in her seat.
“They’ll kill him.”
Naomi watched Hale disappear through the closing garage exit.
“He knows how to survive.”
The words sounded confident.
She did not feel them.
The sedan raced through the rain, following a private road between dark trees. Behind them, Whitmore House glowed against the night as police lights flashed across its windows.
Adrian gripped the steering wheel.
“Where is the safe house?”
Naomi opened the briefcase and searched beneath the documents.
Hale had placed a small envelope beneath the data drive.
Her name was written across the front.
NAOMI—ONLY IF I FAIL.
She tore it open.
Inside was a key, an address in Boston, and a handwritten note.
DO NOT TRUST RICHARD.
DO NOT TRUST THE POLICE.
DO NOT TRUST ME UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT I DID.
Beneath the note was a photograph.
It showed Hale, Daniel, and a third person standing beside a private aircraft six years earlier.
The third person was a woman.
Naomi recognized her instantly.
Celia Ward.
The senior housekeeper at Whitmore House.
The woman who had hired Naomi eleven months earlier.
The woman who had given Vanessa the staff schedule that morning.
Naomi looked up.
“Turn the car around.”
Adrian glanced in the mirror. “What?”
“The leak is still at the mansion.”
“Who?”
Naomi held up the photograph.
Eleanor’s face went white.
“Celia?”
Richard swore softly.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“That’s impossible. Celia has worked for the Whitmores for thirty years.”
“She knew my brother,” Naomi said.
Eleanor took the photograph with trembling fingers.
“No. Celia knew my husband.”
Naomi stared at her.
“What?”
Eleanor looked toward the burning lights of Whitmore House behind them.
“She wasn’t merely our housekeeper.”
Before she could explain, headlights appeared ahead.
Three black vehicles blocked the service road.
Adrian hit the brakes.
The armored sedan slid sideways on the wet pavement.
Men stepped from the vehicles carrying rifles.
Vanessa screamed.
Adrian shifted into reverse.
A fourth vehicle appeared behind them.
They were trapped.
One man walked toward the sedan beneath a black umbrella.
He wore an expensive gray suit.
Naomi had never seen him before.
Richard clearly had.
All the blood drained from his face.
“No,” he whispered.
The man stopped in front of the armored windshield and smiled.
Vanessa looked at her father.
“Who is that?”
Richard did not answer.
The man raised one hand and pressed a remote control.
The sedan’s engine died.
Its locks clicked open.
Naomi reached for the pistol.
The man outside spoke through the windshield.
“Good evening, Mr. Sterling.”
Richard stared at him in horror.

The stranger’s smile widened.
“I’ve come to collect the daughter you promised me.”
