Chapter 15 - The Last Bridge

The maintenance bridge twisted beneath their feet.
Metal screamed as another support broke away from the command building.
“Keep moving!” Adrian shouted.
Naomi supported Daniel from one side while Adrian held him from the other. Her brother’s boots dragged across the wet steel.
Ahead, Vanessa and Eleanor carried Celia between them.
Lucian was already near the seawall.
Arthur followed several steps behind Adrian, clutching his wounded hand against his chest.
The port burned around them.
Warehouse Six had collapsed. Flames climbed through the roof of Warehouse Four. Seawater poured into the dry dock, carrying broken crates, fuel drums, and sections of concrete through the darkness.
The bridge buckled.
Vanessa lost her footing.
Celia slipped from her arms.
Eleanor caught the railing with one hand and Celia’s jacket with the other.
“Help!”
Naomi lowered Daniel carefully.
Adrian held him against the bridge while Naomi ran forward.
She grabbed Celia beneath the shoulders and pulled.
Vanessa regained her footing and lifted from the other side.
Together they dragged Celia onto a stable section.
The bridge shifted again.
Arthur cried out behind them.
Naomi turned.
A section of walkway had fallen between Arthur and the others, leaving a six-foot gap above the flooded dock.
Arthur stood on the opposite side.
“Adrian!”
Adrian looked at the gap.
Then at Daniel.
Naomi saw the conflict in him.
Daniel needed both of them.
Arthur might not survive another collapse.
“I’ll hold Daniel,” Naomi said.
Adrian lowered her brother into her arms and moved toward the gap.
Eleanor shouted, “Leave him!”
Arthur stared at her.
The words struck them both.
Eleanor’s face twisted with pain.
For more than fifty years, Arthur had shaped her life. He had lied to her, used her family, faked his death, and turned their home into a tool for the Dominion.
Still, watching him face death tore open something old inside her.
Arthur extended his good hand.
“Ellie.”
She looked away.
Adrian lay flat on the bridge and reached across the gap.
“Jump.”
Arthur looked down at the black water.
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
“The gap is too far.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“You told me power was taken. Take your chance.”
Arthur gathered himself and jumped.
His fingers caught Adrian’s wrist.
For a moment, he hung above the flood.
Adrian struggled to pull him up.
The bridge groaned.
Naomi saw the metal beneath Adrian bending.
“Let him go!” Vanessa shouted.
Arthur looked up at his grandson.
“Do not listen to her.”
Adrian’s arm shook.
Arthur’s weight dragged him toward the edge.
Naomi placed Daniel down and ran back. She caught Adrian around the waist.
Vanessa joined her.
Together, they pulled.
Arthur’s chest reached the bridge.
Then a gunshot sounded.
Adrian jerked.
Blood appeared along his shoulder.
Everyone looked toward the seawall.
Lucian stood near the exit holding a pistol.
“You should have left him,” he called.
Naomi drew her weapon.
Lucian fired again.
The bullet struck the railing beside her.
Arthur used the distraction.
He pulled Adrian forward, climbed over him, and reached for the pistol hidden inside Adrian’s jacket.
Naomi saw it.
“Adrian!”
Arthur seized the weapon and rolled away.
He pointed it at Naomi.
“You destroyed everything.”
Adrian clutched his bleeding shoulder.
“Grandfather, stop.”
Arthur’s face had become wild.
“The evidence can still be contained. Servers can be seized. Journalists can disappear.”
“The upload reached thousands of destinations,” Naomi said.
“Then thousands can be silenced.”
“You really believe that.”
“I built a world where belief is irrelevant.”
Daniel moved behind Naomi.
Weakly.
Slowly.
He reached for a broken length of metal on the bridge.
Arthur saw him.
“You.”
He shifted the pistol toward Daniel.
Naomi stepped into the line of fire.
Arthur smiled bitterly.
“Always the protector.”
“So were you once, perhaps.”
“I was never sentimental.”
“That is not true.”
Eleanor moved closer.
Arthur’s eyes went to her.
She continued.
“You loved Charles.”
Their son.
Adrian’s legal father.
Arthur’s expression flickered.
“You loved him until he refused to become like you.”
“He was weak.”
“He was kind.”
“He was weak.”
“You arranged the car crash that killed him.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
Arthur’s silence confirmed it.
Eleanor’s face crumpled.
“I always knew.”
Arthur stared at her.
“No.”
“I knew the brakes had been altered. I knew the investigation was closed too quickly. I knew you stood beside his coffin without crying.”
“Charles intended to expose us.”
“He was our son.”
“He threatened everything.”
Adrian looked as though the bridge had disappeared beneath him.
“You killed my father.”
Arthur turned the gun toward him.
“He was never your father by blood.”
“He was my father in every way that mattered.”
Arthur’s hand tightened.
“And I was your grandfather.”
“No,” Adrian said. “You were the shadow over my family.”
Lucian fired again from the seawall.
The bullet struck Arthur in the back.
He staggered.
His pistol discharged into the air.
Eleanor screamed.
Arthur fell against the railing.
Adrian caught him instinctively.
For one moment, grandfather and grandson stared at each other.
Arthur’s mouth moved.
“Do not let them erase me.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“You erased yourself.”
Arthur slipped from his hands and fell into the flooded dock.
The current carried him beneath the burning debris.
He did not surface.
Lucian ran.
Naomi fired twice.
One bullet struck the seawall beside him.
The second hit his leg.
He fell near the tunnel entrance.
The bridge began collapsing again.
Naomi had to choose.
Capture Lucian.
Or get Daniel and the others out.
Daniel touched her arm.
“Go.”
She looked at Lucian crawling toward the darkness.
He had built trafficking networks.
Ordered deaths.
Manipulated families.
He deserved justice.
Not a bullet in the back.
Naomi holstered her weapon.
They lifted Daniel again and crossed the final section.
The bridge collapsed behind them seconds after they reached the seawall.
Lucian lay on the concrete, one hand pressed against his bleeding leg.
Vanessa approached him with the rifle.
He looked up.
“Your father will still choose me over you.”
She stared at him.
“Perhaps.”
“You have no company. No engagement. No protection.”
Vanessa lowered the rifle.
“No. I have consequences.”
She kicked his pistol into the water.
Then she took a restraint from Hale’s equipment pouch and secured Lucian’s wrists.
Naomi watched her.
The woman who had once kicked a maid to prove she had power now stood over one of the most dangerous men in the country and chose not to become cruel.
It did not erase the past.
But it was change.
They followed the seawall tunnel toward the coast.
Celia drifted in and out of consciousness. Adrian’s shoulder wound bled but appeared to have passed through muscle. Daniel could barely walk.
Behind them, Blackwater continued collapsing.
Naomi kept looking back.
Hale had not emerged.
She knew no one could have survived the server chamber.
Still, she looked.
At the tunnel mouth, rain and cold air met them.
The fishing boat had broken free from its rope and vanished into the storm.
Eleanor stared at the waves.
“How do we leave?”
A helicopter approached from the south.
Everyone raised their weapons.
Naomi studied its lights.
No military markings.
No visible identification.
The helicopter hovered above the rocks and lowered a rope ladder.
A voice came through a loudspeaker.
“Naomi Reyes, this is Special Agent Maya Chen with the federal anti-corruption task force. Daniel’s files reached us twenty-three minutes ago.”
Daniel smiled weakly.
“She got it.”
Naomi looked at him.
“You know her?”
“She was our outside contact.”
The helicopter landed on a narrow concrete platform above the seawall.
Agents rushed out with medical equipment.
Naomi did not lower her weapon until Maya Chen removed her helmet and showed an identification code Daniel had included in his files.
Even then, trust came slowly.
Medical teams treated Celia, Adrian, and Daniel.
Lucian was placed in restraints and loaded beneath armed guard.
Vanessa sat on the concrete while a medic bandaged her arm.
Eleanor stood alone near the edge of the platform, staring toward the ruins.
Naomi joined her.
“You saved Arthur.”
Eleanor’s eyes remained on the water.
“I tried.”
“After everything he did.”
“I did not save him because he deserved it.”
“Why, then?”
“So Adrian would not spend the rest of his life wondering whether he could have.”
Naomi looked toward Adrian.
He sat beside Celia’s stretcher, holding his biological mother’s hand while a medic worked on his shoulder.
Eleanor continued.
“Love is not always a reward for goodness. Sometimes it is the burden we carry because we once saw goodness in someone who chose to abandon it.”
Naomi understood.
She thought of Hale.
“He stayed behind,” she said.
Eleanor nodded.
“Do you forgive him?”
“No.”
“Do you grieve him?”
“Yes.”
Both truths could exist.
The agents prepared to evacuate them.
Daniel lay on a stretcher beneath a thermal blanket.
Naomi sat beside him inside the helicopter.
As they lifted into the storm, Blackwater Port disappeared beneath smoke and waves.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Did it work?”
Maya Chen leaned forward from the opposite seat.
“The files reached more than forty independent news organizations, twelve federal jurisdictions, and five international courts. Arrest teams are mobilizing.”
Lucian closed his eyes.
The Dominion had survived wars, elections, investigations, and betrayals.
But it could not survive evidence copied beyond its control.
Daniel looked at Naomi.
“Hale?”
She said nothing.
He understood.
His eyes closed.
A tear moved into his hairline.
“He knew what would happen.”
“So did you.”
“I hoped he would leave.”
“You both built plans around dying.”
“We learned from dramatic people.”
Naomi almost laughed.
Then Daniel’s monitor began beeping.
The medic leaned over him.
“His pressure is dropping.”
Naomi gripped his hand.
“Daniel?”
His eyes opened briefly.
“Nomi.”
“I’m here.”
“Don’t let them make me a hero.”
“Why?”
“Heroes are easier to forgive than brothers.”
His grip weakened.
The monitor alarm grew louder.
The medic pushed Naomi back.
“We need room.”
Daniel’s eyes closed.
Naomi watched strangers work over the brother she had just found.
The helicopter accelerated toward Boston.
May you like
“Stay with me,” she whispered.
But Daniel did not answer.
