Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Went Back

The chamber temperature reached one hundred ten degrees.
Daniel removed his jacket and continued working.
Naomi struck the glass until her knuckles bled.
“Open it!”
Celia shook her head weakly.
“The override only works once.”
“There has to be another.”
Arthur laughed from where Adrian held him against the console.
“There isn’t.”
Naomi turned toward him.
She crossed the room and drove him into the wall.
“You built this facility.”
“I improved it.”
“Then tell me how to open that door.”
Arthur’s smile was gone.
“You cannot.”
She pressed the pistol beneath his jaw.
“Try again.”
“Killing me will not save him.”
“No. But it will improve my final minute.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Arthur.”
He looked at her.
She raised the revolver.
Unlike Naomi, Eleanor’s hand did not shake.
“Tell her.”
For the first time, Arthur seemed to believe he might die.
“There is a mechanical release.”
“Where?” Naomi demanded.
“Inside the cooling tunnel.”
Hale looked toward the flooded maintenance grate.
“That tunnel leads beneath the chamber.”
Arthur nodded.
“There is a lever beneath the north wall.”
“What happens when it is pulled?”
“It disengages the lower lock.”
“And the upper?”
“The emergency pressure system must be triggered simultaneously.”
“From where?”
“The chamber.”
Daniel could trigger one side.
Someone outside had to reach the other.
Naomi ran toward the open grate.
Hale blocked her.
“The tunnel is flooding.”
“I know.”
“The cooling pumps are overheating. The water may be boiling near the chamber.”
“Move.”
“Naomi—”
She hit him.
Not hard enough to injure.
Hard enough to make the message clear.
“You kept me away from my brother for six years. You will not keep me from him now.”
Hale stepped aside.
“I’m coming.”
“No. Restore the uplink.”
“It is stable.”
“Lucian?”
“Unconscious and restrained.”
Vanessa entered the command room, limping. Blood marked her sleeve, but the wound appeared shallow.
Adrian reached for her.
“You’re hurt.”
“So is everyone.”
She looked at the glass chamber and understood immediately.
“What do we do?”
Naomi pointed toward Arthur.
“Make sure he stays alive until Daniel is out.”
Vanessa took the rifle from Adrian.
“I can manage that.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Your father will disown you.”
Vanessa’s expression became cold.
“My father sold me.”
“Then you have no family.”
Eleanor moved beside her.
“That is not true.”
Vanessa looked at the older woman.
Eleanor nodded once.
It was not adoption.
Not forgiveness.
But it was an offered place to stand.
Vanessa turned the rifle back toward Arthur.
“You should worry about your own family.”
Naomi descended into the maintenance shaft with Hale behind her.
Water rushed around their boots immediately.
The tunnel had become a narrow river, hot from the overloaded server system. Steam clouded the air.
Hale shouted over the noise.
“The north wall is eighty feet ahead.”
They moved against the current.
Each step became more difficult.
The demolition timer sounded through speakers above.
01:31.
Upload: 74%.
The chamber temperature: 128 degrees.
Naomi imagined Daniel inside.
Sweating.
Weakening.
Still typing.
The tunnel narrowed.
Water reached her waist.
A loose pipe tore from the wall and rushed toward them.
Hale pushed Naomi aside.
The pipe struck his shoulder and drove him against the concrete.
He disappeared beneath the water.
Naomi caught his jacket and pulled him up.
His face twisted with pain.
“Shoulder dislocated.”
“Can you move?”
“Yes.”
He could not.
Naomi hooked his good arm around her neck and dragged him toward a maintenance alcove.
“You stay here.”
“Not a chance.”
“You cannot climb with one arm.”
“I can pull the pressure line.”
She looked toward the pipes overhead.
Arthur had said the emergency pressure system had to be triggered from inside the chamber, but Hale recognized something else.
“This line feeds the chamber locks,” he said. “If I rupture it when you pull the mechanical release, the pressure drop may open the door.”
“May?”
“We are running out of certain options.”
The timer reached 00:58.
Upload: 78%.
Almost enough to stop demolition.
But Daniel still needed to survive.
Naomi continued alone.
The water grew hotter.
She gritted her teeth as it burned through her clothes.
At the north wall, she found a steel lever beneath the surface.
It would not move.
She placed both hands around it and pulled.
Nothing.
Above, the demolition timer reached thirty seconds.
Naomi planted one foot against the wall.
She pulled until pain tore through her shoulders.
The lever shifted half an inch.
“Come on.”
She thought of Daniel teaching her to ride a bicycle.
Daniel carrying her home after she broke her ankle.
Daniel standing between her and their mother when Naomi had lied.
Daniel disappearing into a burning safe house.
She pulled again.
The lever slammed down.
A red emergency light flashed.
Hale struck the pressure pipe with a wrench.
Once.
Twice.
The line burst.
Steam exploded through the tunnel.
Above, the chamber door shook.
But it did not open.
The demolition timer reached ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Naomi climbed the ladder toward the command room.
Seven.
Six.
The upload hit eighty percent.
NETWORK ISOLATION COMPLETE.
DEMOLITION SIGNAL TERMINATED.
The clock stopped at four seconds.
For one brief moment, everyone froze.
Then the port shook violently anyway.
Naomi reached the command room as an explosion tore through Warehouse Six.
The floor tilted.
Lights shattered.
Arthur laughed.
“The demolition signal stopped. The independent charges did not.”
Daniel had prevented the full destruction.
But Lucian’s relocated explosives were still active.
The chamber temperature reached 144 degrees.
Daniel collapsed against the console.
“Daniel!”
Naomi ran to the glass.
He pushed himself up weakly.
The lower lock indicator had turned green.
The pressure system indicator remained red.
Hale climbed from the shaft, soaked and injured.
“It did not fully disengage.”
Arthur said, “The upper mechanism requires internal activation.”
Daniel could still activate it.
If he remained conscious.
Naomi struck the intercom.
“Daniel, emergency pressure release.”
He lifted his head.
His eyes struggled to focus.
Naomi pointed toward the control panel inside.
“Top right. Red switch.”
Daniel staggered toward it.
The upload reached eighty-four percent.
Another explosion shook the port.
A section of ceiling collapsed in the corridor outside.
Daniel placed his hand against the wall for balance.
Three steps from the switch.
Then he fell.
Naomi screamed his name.
He did not move.
Adrian grabbed Arthur.
“Tell us another way.”
“There is none.”
Celia’s voice rose weakly from the floor.
“Yes, there is.”
Everyone turned.
She pointed toward Adrian.
“Founding lineage.”
Arthur’s face changed.
Celia continued.
“The system was built to obey Victor Ward’s descendants.”
Adrian approached the external scanner.
“What do I do?”
“Place both hands on the panel and issue a verbal command.”
Arthur shouted, “It will not recognize him.”
Celia looked at him.
“You spent thirty years preserving his bloodline. Let us see whether you succeeded.”
Adrian pressed both palms against the scanner.
“Emergency chamber release.”
The panel flashed.
VOICE NOT RECOGNIZED.
Arthur smiled.
Celia said, “Use the family authorization.”
“What is it?”
Arthur remained silent.
Eleanor looked at him.
Then her eyes widened.
“The phrase above Victor’s office.”
Celia nodded.
Adrian faced the scanner again.
“Power is inherited. Authority is taken.”
The panel turned blue.
FOUNDING HEIR CONFIRMED.
The chamber door began opening.
Naomi squeezed through before the gap was wide enough.
Heat struck her like a wall.
She ran to Daniel and dragged him toward the doorway.
The upload reached eighty-seven percent.
The moment Daniel left the terminal, the progress froze.
SYSTEM OPERATOR ABSENT.
Naomi looked at the screen.
If they left now, the evidence release would fail.
If someone stayed, the upload could finish.
Hale entered the chamber.
“Take Daniel.”
He moved toward the console.
Naomi caught his arm.
“The heat will kill you.”
“I know.”
“No more deciding who dies.”
He looked at Daniel.
“This is not your decision.”
“It is mine.”
Hale took the seat at the terminal and placed his hand on the controls.
“Daniel trusted me once. I betrayed that trust. Let me finish what he began.”
Naomi wanted to argue.
Then Daniel coughed in her arms.
The temperature rose to 150.
She dragged him out.
The chamber door began closing automatically.
Hale looked at her through the glass.
“I am sorry.”
Naomi held Daniel against her.
“Finish the upload.”
Hale nodded.
The door sealed.
UPLOAD RESUMED.
Eighty-eight percent.
Arthur stared at Hale.
“You think dying makes you innocent?”
Hale looked through the glass at him.
“No.”
He entered the final commands.
“It makes me useful.”
Another explosion tore through the port.
The command room floor split near the eastern wall.
Seawater surged through the crack.
Eleanor and Vanessa lifted Celia.
Adrian pulled Daniel’s other arm over his shoulder.
Naomi looked at the exit.
Blocked by fallen steel.
The maintenance shaft was filling rapidly.
Arthur smiled.
“You saved the data and trapped yourselves.”
Lucian’s voice sounded from the corridor.
“Not all of us.”
He stood in the shattered doorway, one arm hanging uselessly from his wounded shoulder.
In his other hand, he held a detonator.
Vanessa raised the rifle.
Lucian pressed the button.
A section of wall exploded outward.
Cold night air rushed into the command room.
Beyond it, a maintenance bridge crossed the flooded dry dock toward the seawall.
Lucian looked at Naomi.
“I prefer surviving empires.”
He threw the detonator into the water.
Then he ran onto the bridge.
Arthur shouted after him.
“Coward!”
Lucian did not look back.
The upload reached ninety-one percent.
Naomi looked toward Hale behind the glass.
The chamber temperature exceeded 160.
He was beginning to weaken.
The bridge outside shook violently.
Adrian carried Daniel toward it.
Vanessa and Eleanor moved Celia.
Naomi remained.
“Go,” Hale said through the intercom.
“I am not leaving you.”
“You cannot open the door again.”
“Adrian can.”
The external panel had gone dark.
The explosions had destroyed its power.
Hale smiled faintly.
“Then this is where our road ends.”
Naomi pressed one hand against the glass.
“You do not get forgiveness because you die.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to escape what you did.”
“I know.”
“You have to live with it.”
His eyes filled.
“That would be harder.”
The upload reached ninety-five.
Behind Naomi, the bridge began collapsing section by section.
Adrian shouted.
“We have to go!”
Hale touched the opposite side of the glass.
“Your mother would be proud of you.”
Naomi’s voice broke.
“She would be furious with you.”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
The upload reached ninety-eight.
The ceiling above the chamber cracked.
Naomi stepped backward.
Hale returned to the console.
Ninety-nine.
The server room filled with white light.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Across every screen, one final message appeared.
THE DOMINION HAS BEEN EXPOSED.
Then the chamber ceiling collapsed.
Naomi screamed.
Dust and fire swallowed the glass room.
Adrian seized her around the waist.
“We have to move!”
He pulled her toward the broken wall.
Naomi fought him.
“Hale!”
The glass vanished beneath falling concrete.
No movement remained inside.
The maintenance bridge began separating from the command room.
Daniel barely breathed between Naomi and Adrian.
Eleanor and Vanessa were already halfway across with Celia.
Arthur tried to follow.
Adrian turned.
His grandfather reached for him.
“Help me.”
For the first time, Arthur Whitmore looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just terrified.
Adrian stared at the man who had shaped his entire life through lies.
Then he extended his hand.
Arthur smiled in relief.
Adrian pulled him onto the bridge.
Naomi looked at him.
After everything, Adrian still refused to become his grandfather.
May you like
They ran.
Behind them, Blackwater Port collapsed into the sea.
