Chapter 13 - Infiltrating the Docks

Midnight descended upon the docks like a shroud of black velvet.
Shipping containers towered over the concrete piers like giant metal monoliths.
Cranes loomed silently against the starry sky.
A black van rolled silently past the security checkpoint, driven by one of Adrien’s loyal lieutenants.
In the back sat Adrien and Maya.
Maya wore tactical black clothing that hugged her frame, her hair tied back in a tight ponytail.
The silver pistol was tucked securely into her waistband.
“We move in three minutes,” Adrien whispered, checking the magazine of his assault rifle.
“Remember, stay behind me.”
“I’m not a shield, Adrien,” Maya whispered back with a smirk.
“I’m the secret weapon.”
Adrien rolled his eyes, though a faint smile touched his lips.
The van stopped near Warehouse 4.
The rear doors slid open silently.
They stepped out into the crisp night air, the smell of salt water and diesel fuel filling their lungs.
Two guards stood outside the warehouse door, smoking cigarettes and laughing.
Before Adrien could raise his weapon, Maya stepped forward with astonishing speed.
She crept up behind the first guard, struck him hard across the back of the neck with the heavy butt of her flashlight, and caught him as he dropped.
The second guard spun around in shock, but Adrien was already there, sweeping his legs out from under him and driving the butt of his rifle into his chest.
Both guards hit the concrete, unconscious.
Adrien stared at Maya in sheer disbelief.
“Where did you learn that?” Adrien whispered.
“My older brother was an MMA fighter,” Maya whispered back, stepping over the guard.
“And I had three younger brothers. You learn survival skills quickly.”
Adrien shook his head in amusement.

“Remind me to never tick you off.”
“Oh, you already did, on day one.”
