Chapter 8 - Gunfire in the Foyer

Glass rained across the marble floor like frozen diamonds.
“Down!” Adrien roared, instantly grabbing Maya by the waist and pulling her behind a massive marble pillar.
Bullets pierced through the air, embedding themselves into the stone with deafening cracks.
“What is happening?!” Maya screamed over the gunfire.
“Rossetti,” Adrien spat, his face hardening into pure granite.
He drew a sleek black 9mm pistol from his holster with practiced, lethal speed.
“He found out about Marcus.”
“Great! Your domestic dispute just turned into a turf war!” Maya yelled, ducking as another volley of bullets shattered a crystal vase above them.
Adrien peeked around the pillar, firing three precise shots into the foyer.
A man in tactical gear dropped instantly.
Adrien turned back to Maya.
“Stay right here,” he commanded.
“Are you kidding me? I’m not staying anywhere near this shooting gallery!” Maya grabbed the edge of his jacket.
“I am not leaving you exposed,” Adrien growled.
“Then give me a gun!” Maya shouted back.
Adrien stared at her in utter shock.
“You want a gun?”
“Do I look like I want to knit a sweater right now? Give me a weapon or I swear I will throw my high heel at the next gunman!”
Adrien let out a breathless laugh, pulled a compact silver pistol from his ankle holster, and pressed it into her trembling hand.
“Safety is off,” Adrien instructed, his eyes burning into hers.
“Aim for center mass.”
Before Maya could process what she was holding, two armed intruders rounded the corner of the hallway, raising their rifles.
Adrien fired twice, dropping the first.
The second man turned his rifle directly toward Maya.
Instinct took over.
Maya raised the silver pistol, closed her eyes, and pulled the trigger.
Bang.
The heavy recoil rattled her entire arm.
When she opened her eyes, the second intruder was flat on his back, clutching his shoulder.
Maya stared at the smoking gun in her hand.
May you like
“Well,” Maya whispered, her voice shaking.
“I guess I’m better at this than mopping.”
