Chapter 15 - The Rescue

Time seemed to slow down.
Maya struggled against the enforcer’s iron grip, but he was twice her size.
“Got you, little bird,” the enforcer sneered.
Bang.
A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
The enforcer’s eyes widened.
A smoking bullet hole appeared right between his eyes.
He slumped forward, collapsing lifelessly onto the concrete floor.
Standing behind him was Adrien.
His rifle still smoked.
His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated fury.
Adrien dropped the rifle, sprinted across the gap, and grabbed Maya by the shoulders.
“Are you hurt?!” Adrien demanded, his voice cracking with a rare panic.
“I—I’m fine!” Maya breathed heavily, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“You idiot,” Adrien pulled her violently against his chest, burying his face in her hair.
“I told you to stay behind me.”
“And I told you I’m not a helpless damsel,” Maya muffled against his chest, though she wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.
Adrien pulled back, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her.
It was fierce, desperate, and filled with all the unspoken terror and passion they had buried for days.
Maya kissed him back, letting go of all her fear.
For a moment, the gunfire, the mafia war, and the dangerous world around them completely vanished.
“Ahem,” coughed a voice from the office balcony.

They broke apart.
Dominic Rossetti stood on the balcony, clapping slowly with a mocking grin, holding a gold-plated revolver pointed straight at Adrien’s back.
