Chapter 8 - The Arrival of the Final ReckoningJulian lay on the floor,

his expensive tuxedo covered in dust and his own blood,
a pathetic shadow of the man who had walked into the room.
He looked up at me through blurred eyes,
his breath coming in painful,
ragged gasps that echoed through the quiet hall.
"Please,"
he whispered,
the word finally escaping his lips after a lifetime of arrogance.
"Just let me go,
Victoria...
I'll give you whatever you want."
"You have nothing left to give,
Julian,"
I replied,
my voice completely devoid of any pity or warmth.
Suddenly,
the heavy electronic locks on the main security shutters began to click,
one by one.
A low,
whirring sound filled the room as the massive steel plates began to slide back up into the ceiling.
The guests held their breath,
wondering if they were finally being released from their gilded prison.
But as the doors slowly opened,
the night air did not bring freedom;
it brought the harsh,
flashing blue and red lights of federal law enforcement.
Dozens of heavily armed tactical officers poured into the ballroom,
their weapons raised and their movements perfectly synchronized.
They did not move toward me,
nor did they threaten any of the staff members who stood along the perimeter.
Instead,
they moved directly into the crowd,
identifying the individuals whose names were still scrolling across the digital screens.
"Marcus Vance has been detained,"
the leading federal agent announced,
walking straight toward the spot where Julian was lying.
"Julian Vance,
you are under arrest for corporate fraud,
conspiracy,
and felony assault."
The officers moved quickly,
pulling Julian up from the floor and securing his hands behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties.
He didn't fight back,
he didn't scream,
and he didn't make any further empty threats.
The reality of his situation had finally settled deep into his bones,
crushing whatever spirit he had left.
As he was being led away,
he passed close to where I was standing,
his eyes locking onto mine for one final,
desperate moment.
I didn't say a word,
simply watching as the doors of the law enforcement vehicle closed behind him.

The empire that had terrorized this city for generations had been dismantled in less than three hours,
all within the walls of a single ballroom.
