Chapter 2 - THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR

By afternoon, the atmosphere in the mansion had shifted subtly. The guards were more alert, Theresa's steps were lighter, and Lucas had taken two more full, healthy feedings without a single complication.
Dr. Bennett conducted his 2:00 PM examination in the nursery, his stethoscope resting gently against Lucas's chest.
"His heart rate is rock solid," Dr. Bennett declared, looking up at Hannah with deep professional admiration. "Lungs are completely clear. His weight has increased by four ounces since yesterday. Frankly, Miss Brooks, you've done what three specialized pediatric teams in Manhattan failed to do."
"He did the work," Hannah murmured softly, kissing the top of Lucas's soft head. "He just needed to know someone was holding him."
"Speaking of holding," Dr. Bennett lowered his voice, looking toward the open door. "Has Mr. Vale held him today?"
Hannah paused, her eyes darkening. "He comes into the nursery at midnight. He stands by the crib for five minutes while Lucas sleeps, then he leaves without saying a word."
"He's afraid," Bennett sighed. "He lost Isabel so quickly... I think he's terrified that if he opens his heart to that boy, tragedy will strike again."
Before Hannah could answer, the heavy front doors of the estate echoed through the lower foyer. Shouting voices cut through the quiet house.
"I don't care about your security protocols, Viktor!" a sharp, high-pitched female voice barked down below. "I am Isabel's sister! I have every legal and moral right to see my nephew!"
Hannah wrapped a light shawl around her shoulders, gently placing Lucas in his crib, and stepped out onto the upper landing.
Standing in the main foyer was a tall, glamorous woman dressed in an expensive designer fur coat, holding an alligator-skin handbag. Her face was struck with sharp, aggressive features, her eyes dark and calculating. Beside her stood two heavily built men in grey suits who clearly did not belong to Adrian's security detail.
This was Victoria Sterling—Isabel's older sister and the heiress to the Sterling Logistics fortune, a company that had long sought to merge with Vale Shipping.
"Miss Sterling," Theresa Marino said, standing firmly at the base of the grand staircase, her voice icy cold. "Mr. Vale is in a private meeting in the west wing. He gave explicit orders that no visitors were to be admitted today."
"I am not a visitor, Theresa! I am family!" Victoria snapped, taking a step forward. "My sister died delivering that child! I heard rumors that Adrian brought some low-class wet nurse from the streets into this house to raise Isabel's son! I demand to see the child immediately!"

Victoria lifted her eyes and caught sight of Hannah standing on the landing above.
Her lip curled in immediate disgust. "And I suppose you are the peasant girl feeding my nephew."
