Chapter 4 - AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCE

The silence that returned to the foyer was absolute.

Theresa quietly bowed her head and stepped back toward the staff quarters, leaving Adrian and Hannah alone near the base of the staircase.

Hannah looked at Adrian. She saw the tension in his shoulders, the deep lines of exhaustion carved around his eyes, and the lingering shadow of grief that never truly left him.

"She was right about one thing," Hannah said softly.

Adrian turned his gaze to her, his brow arching slightly. "What?"

"You haven't held him."

Adrian froze. His hands, resting in his pockets, tightened into fists. "I see him every night."

"Seeing him from five feet away isn't holding him," Hannah replied, stepping down to the ground floor. "He knows your voice, Adrian. He heard it for nine months while his mother was carrying him. He needs to know his father isn't afraid of him."

"I am not afraid of anything," Adrian growled defensively, his classic mob-boss pride flaring up.

"You're afraid of loving him," Hannah countered gently, her hazel eyes looking straight into his soul without a shred of fear. "Because you think if you love him, you'll lose him too. Just like Isabel. Just like I lost Grace."

The mention of her dead daughter hit the room like a quiet chord of shared sorrow.

Adrian stared at her, his hard mask slipping for a fraction of a second, exposing the raw, bleeding wound beneath.

"Come upstairs," Hannah murmured softly. "He's going to wake up soon."

Five minutes later, inside the warm, sunlit nursery, Hannah carefully lifted Lucas from his crib. The baby stirred, making a tiny, sweet yawning noise as he stretched his small arms.

Adrian stood near the door, looking as out of place in the soft cream nursery as a weapon left on an altar.

"Sit down," Hannah instructed, pointing to a large velvet armchair in the corner.

Adrian hesitated, then slowly crossed the room and sat down. He moved rigidly, his massive frame stiff and defensive.

Hannah walked over, carefully placing the tiny, blanket-wrapped bundle into Adrian's broad arms. She adjusted his large hands, showing him how to support Lucas's small head and neck.

"Like this," she whispered, her fingers brushing against Adrian's warm skin. "Support his shoulders."

The moment Lucas settled against his father's chest, the baby let out a long, contented sigh. He nudged his soft nose against Adrian's crisp white shirt, his tiny hand opening and curling tightly around Adrian's thumb.

Adrian Vale gasped—a tiny, broken sound.

He looked down at his son. The dark, terrifying shipping magnate who commanded hundreds of men, who controlled millions of dollars in illicit and legitimate commerce, looked down at the tiny human resting on his chest and began to tremble.

Hannah stepped back, a soft, sorrowful smile touching her lips as tears filled her eyes. She turned quietly and walked out of the nursery, closing the door behind her to give the father and son their first real moment together.
