Part 19

Adrian stared at the small, faded piece of paper in Emma’s hand as though looking at a ghost.
He carefully took it from her fingers, his touch incredibly light, almost reverent.
As his eyes scanned his late wife’s hurried handwriting, the hard, impenetrable mask of the mafia don completely dissolved.
A single, ragged breath escaped his lips.
"Clara..." he whispered, his thumb gently tracing the blue ink.
"She knew there was a mole in the Commission before she died," Emma said softly, keeping her voice low to not disturb the sleeping Leo. "She knew they would try to steal the ledger to destroy you. She created a false cipher on the back of the medallion to mislead them."
Adrian closed his eyes, a bitter, complex smile touching his face. "She was always three steps ahead of me. I thought I was protecting her, but even from the grave, she is protecting us."
He opened his eyes, the warmth vanishing, replaced by a cold, calculated brilliance.
"If Volkov uses the cipher engraved on the medallion to unlock the ledger... what happens?" Adrian asked.
"According to the note, the false cipher doesn't just display wrong data," Emma explained, pointing to the text. "It triggers a virus hidden within the encrypted file. It will permanently delete the backup files and broadcast a corrupted signal containing fake bank accounts directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Adrian let out a short, sharp laugh.
It was the laugh of a man who had just realized his enemy had walked directly into a meat grinder.
"Volkov thinks he has won," Adrian said, walking back to his desk. "He’s currently assembling the heads of the five families in Chicago to showcase the ledger and declare himself the new king of the Midwest. He thinks he’s going to use my money to buy their loyalty."
"But if he enters that code..." Emma realized.
"He will incriminate himself and every boss in that room to the feds," Adrian finished. "The FBI will launch a synchronized raid within minutes. The entire network will be decapitated in a single night."
He looked up at Emma, his eyes burning with an intense, magnetic admiration.
"You didn't just save my son's life tonight, Emma. You just handed me the weapon to destroy my enemies without firing a single bullet."
He stood up, walking toward her until there was no space left between them.
"But Volkov still needs the medallion to get the false code," Adrian said, looking down at the silver disc around Leo's neck. "He’s desperate. He will send everyone he has left to find us."

"Then what do we do?" Emma asked, her heart racing not from fear, but from the overwhelming proximity of the man before her.
"We give him what he wants," Adrian said, a dangerous, beautiful smile appearing on his face. "We invite him to his own funeral."
