Part 29

By dawn, the cove was silent once more. Hector’s cleanup crew had already disposed of the bodies and neutralized the watercraft, leaving no trace of the midnight assault.
Inside the villa's secure study, the atmosphere was tense. Adrian sat behind his massive desk, his fingers flying across an encrypted laptop, while Emma paced the room, a cup of untouched tea in her hand. Leo was safe upstairs, sleeping soundly under the watchful eye of Hector and the nanny.
"Minister Vance," Emma said, stopping in front of the desk. "He's a prominent member of the European parliament. How do we fight someone who has an entire government apparatus shielding him?"
Adrian closed the laptop with a soft click and leaned back, his expression entirely devoid of worry. "A politician's power relies entirely on the illusion of virtue, Emma. Volkov kept meticulous records of everyone he bribed, everyone he leveraged, and everyone he partnered with. When I downloaded his master database in that cathedral, I didn't just take his money. I took his leverage."
He stood up, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of her. "I've just spent the last two hours verifying Vance's financial connections. The fifty million he lost wasn't his money. It belonged to state development funds that he illegally funneled into Volkov's shell companies. He's desperate because if the auditors find out, his life is over."
"So he tried to kill us to bury the truth," Emma realized, her eyes widening.
"Exactly," Adrian nodded. "But he made a fatal mistake. He assumed I was a criminal who would try to fight him with bullets. But against a man like Vance, a bullet is too merciful. And too messy."
Emma looked up at him, a slight smile touching her lips as she began to understand his strategy. "You're going to expose him."
"I'm going to destroy him legally, financially, and socially," Adrian corrected her coldly. "I've already routing the unredacted financial records of his transactions to the International Anti-Corruption Bureau, along with the confession of the operative we captured last night. By noon today, the media will have the story. Vance won't be sending any more assassins. He'll be fighting to stay out of a maximum-security prison for the rest of his life."

He reached out, pulling her into his arms, holding her tight against his chest. "The man who sold our coordinates to Vance—the FBI informant—has already been taken care of by my associates in the states. The leaks are plugged. The loop is closed."
Emma rested her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. For the first time, she realized that Adrian's true power wasn't his ability to kill; it was his brilliant, absolute mastery over the world's systems. He was an unstoppable force, and he had deployed his entire arsenal just to keep her and Leo safe.
