Part 24

The jet descended over the azure waters of the Mediterranean, landing on a private strip surrounded by rolling hills of olive groves and ancient stone walls. This was Adrian's sanctuary in southern Italy—a heavily fortified coastal villa that combined the elegance of a renaissance estate with the security of a military bunker.

As the SUV wound its way up the cliffside road, Emma marvelled at the breathtaking scenery. The deep blue sea crashed against the jagged rocks far below, and the air was thick with the scent of saltwater and blooming jasmine. It felt a world away from the rain-slicked, gritty streets of the city they had left behind.

The villa itself was magnificent, a sprawling structure of white stone and terra-cotta tiles, surrounded by towering iron gates guarded by armed men who bowed their heads respectfully as Adrian's vehicle approached.

Hector parked in the courtyard, immediately taking charge of the luggage and ensuring Leo was moved into the climate-controlled nursery inside. Adrian led Emma through the grand entrance, his hand resting comfortably on the small of her back.

An hour later, after a long, hot shower that finally washed away the dirt and trauma of the past twenty-four hours, Emma walked down to the wide stone terrace overlooking the sea. She wore a simple, elegant sundress that had been waiting for her in the villa's master suite, her damp hair catching the warm Mediterranean breeze.

Adrian was standing by the stone railing, holding a secure satellite phone to his ear. His expression was grim, his voice low and commanding as he spoke in rapid Italian. When he saw Emma approach, he muttered a final directive and ended the call, slipping the phone into his pocket.

"Is everything alright?" Emma asked, stepping up beside him, the warmth of the sun soothing her tense muscles.

"The fallout in the city is extensive," Adrian replied, turning to face her. "As expected, the federal government has seized all of Volkov's local properties. They are hunting for anyone remotely connected to his inner circle. But Hector's cleanup crew did their job perfectly. There is no physical evidence linking us to the cathedral, and the digital trail is completely erased."

He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied her face. "But a power vacuum always creates ambition. Volkov had partners in Europe. Men who invested heavily in his operations and are now looking at massive financial ruin. They are angry, and they are looking for answers."

Emma felt a familiar chill creep down her spine. "So we aren't completely safe yet?"

Adrian reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing against her cheekbone. The fierce, lethal protector in him flared to life in his eyes. "You are safe. Because before those men can even figure out which continent we are on, I will have dismantled their networks from afar. I didn't build my empire to let a few European remnants threaten my family."

The word hung in the air, heavy and full of meaning. Family. Emma looked into his eyes, realizing that her life was now irrevocably bound to his, not by force, but by a powerful, undeniable connection.
