Chapter 5 - THE UNMASKING

"Going somewhere, Malcolm?" Nathan asked, his voice softer than silk, yet terrifying enough to stop a man's heart.
Reeves stumbled backward, dropping his medical bag onto the rug. Syringes and small vials spilled out across the floor.
"Nathan! Listen to me!" Julian Vance wailed from behind the guards, his face covered in sweat, tears streaming down his cheeks. "It was Reeves! He came to me with the plan! He said he could make it look natural! I didn't want to hurt the boys, Nathan! I swear to God!"
"LIAR!" Reeves screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Julian. "You offered me two million dollars from the trust payout to supply the compound and alter the lab reports! You said Nathan was getting too powerful and needed to be broken!"
Nathan stepped into the room, kicking the heavy doors shut behind him.
The silence that followed was terrifying. Nathan didn't yell. He didn't raise his fists. He simply walked over to the coffee table, picked up one of the pre-filled syringes, and examined it under the lamp light.
"You brought poison into my home," Nathan said softly, turning to face Reeves. "You looked into the eyes of two six-year-old motherless boys, and you slowly drained the life out of them for money."
Reeves fell to his knees, shaking uncontrollably. "Nathan... please! I have a family! I'll give you the antidote formulas! I'll testify against Julian! Just don't kill me!"
"You won't die, Doctor," I intervened, stepping between Nathan and the trembling physician.
Nathan looked at me, his eyes dark with lethal intent.
"Emily, move," Nathan commanded quietly.
"No, Nathan," I said firmly, looking him straight in the eyes. "If you kill them here, you become the monster they wanted everyone to think you are. You give the police a reason to take Jacob and Jonah away from you forever. They deserve justice, but your sons deserve a father who stays out of prison."
Nathan stared at me. For ten long, excruciating seconds, the fate of two men hung by a thread in the heavy silence of the study.

Slowly, Nathan lowered the syringe. He turned to his head of security.
"Take them to the basement," Nathan ordered coldly. "Call federal prosecutors. Give them the chemical analysis, the lab reports, and the recorded confession from the study's security feed. Make sure both of them spend the rest of their natural lives in maximum-security federal prison."
