Chapter 9 - A NEW DAWN

Six months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured grounds of the Coleman estate.
The once-cold, silent mansion had been completely transformed. The dark drapes had been replaced with bright, airy linens, music drifted through the open hallways, and the smells of freshly baked cookies replaced the lingering memory of chemical air.
In the backyard, a huge celebration was under way.
It was Jacob and Jonah's seventh birthday party. Dozens of children from their new private school were running around the lawn, playing tag, jumping in a bounce house, and eating ice cream.
Jacob, now completely healthy, strong, and full of endless energy, came running up to me, grabbing my hand.
"Mommy Emily! Come watch Jonah jump off the swing!" Jacob yelled happily.
My heart melted at the word Mommy—a word the boys had naturally begun calling me three months ago, after Nathan and I officially announced our engagement.
I walked down the garden path, holding Jacob's small hand, watching Jonah leap safely into a pile of soft grass while his friends cheered.
Nathan walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his broad chest, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"Look at them," Nathan murmured, watching our sons laugh and play. "A year ago, I thought I was going to lose them forever."

"You fought for them, Nathan," I said, leaning back into his warm embrace. "And you gave them a real home."
"We gave them a home," Nathan corrected gently, turning me around in his arms to look down into my eyes with infinite love and tenderness. "You brought the light back into this house, Emily."
