Chapter 7 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

While the home was filled with peace, Nathan's world was far from quiet.

Julian Vance’s arrest had caused massive shockwaves throughout the regional business and underworld networks. Rival factions, sensing a moment of potential vulnerability within the Coleman organization, began making bold moves to challenge Nathan’s authority.

One evening, while the boys were upstairs sleeping, a loud commotion broke out near the front security gates.

I walked down to the main foyer to find Nathan speaking with his chief of security, Marcus, whose arm was bandaged and bleeding.

"What happened?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"A warning from the Moretti syndicate," Nathan said grimly, locking the heavy oak front doors. "Julian was feeding them internal intelligence before his arrest. Now that Julian is gone, Moretti thinks I'm weak because I turned my brother-in-law over to the feds instead of killing him."

"They think you've gone soft because you chose the law over street revenge," I realized.

"Precisely," Nathan sighed, rubbing his face. "In my world, mercy is often mistaken for weakness. Moretti wants to take over our shipping routes, and he thinks targeting this estate is the easiest way to break me."

"Then we don't stay here like sitting ducks," I said immediately. "We take the boys to a safe house."

"No," Nathan said, looking at me with a fierce, protective pride. "The safe houses are compromised through Julian's old records. This estate is a fortress, Emily. But I need to handle Moretti once and for all tonight. I need to show the entire city that protecting my family hasn't made me weak—it's made me invincible."

He walked over to his desk, pulled out a small velvet box, and set it on the table.

"If anything happens to me tonight," Nathan said, looking directly into my eyes, "this box contains full legal guardianship papers appointing you as Jacob and Jonah's sole mother and guardian, along with twenty million dollars in a private trust in your name."

"Nathan, no!" I gasped, tears filling my eyes as I pushed the box back toward him. "Don't talk like that! You're coming back!"

Nathan stepped closer, cupping my face in his warm, strong hands, pressing his forehead against mine.

"I will come back," Nathan promised, his voice thick with emotion. "Because for the first time in my life, I have a home worth fighting for."

Before I could answer, he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine—a deep, passionate, promises-filled kiss that left my head spinning.
