Chapter 10 - The Siege of Vance Manor

The iron security gates of the Arlington estate offered no resistance as the heavy push bumper of the state trooper SUV rammed straight through them with a deafening screech of twisted metal.

The decorative iron bars buckled and collapsed onto the manicured gravel driveway as three police cruisers surged through in rapid succession.

I sat in the passenger seat of our car,

my heart pounding in my throat as we followed the convoy up the winding driveway toward the grand neoclassical mansion.

The estate looked serene and untouchable under the afternoon sun,

completely masking the dark horrors hidden within its walls.

As the cruisers slid to a halt in front of the marble portico,

heavily armed state troopers spilled out in tactical gear,

weapons raised and shouting commands.

Detective Miller slammed his car door shut,

jogging toward the front double doors with two officers flanking him.

Before they could even raise a battering ram,

the massive oak doors swung open from the inside.

Arthur Vance stood in the entryway,

dressed in his immaculate designer suit,

his expression a mask of arrogant calm as if he were welcoming honored guests to a cocktail party.

“What is the meaning of this outrage?” Arthur demanded,

raising his voice above the shouting officers while gesturing casually with one hand.

“You are trespassing on private property.

I demand to speak to your commanding officer immediately.

“Arthur Vance,

you are under arrest for suspicion of felony assault,

administering intoxicating substances without consent,

and corporate extortion,

” Detective Miller announced loudly,

stepping forward and flashing a silver badge inches from Arthur’s face.

“Put your hands behind your back.

Arthur’s arrogant facade finally fractured,

a dark flash of genuine panic crossing his eyes as the troopers swarmed past him into the foyer.

“This is an absurd mistake!” Arthur shouted,

struggling slightly as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

“You have no idea who you are dealing with!

My lawyers will strip your badges before the sun sets!”

“Save it for the judge,

Mr.

Vance,

” Detective Miller replied coldly,

shoving him toward the waiting cruiser.

“Where is Chloe?” I demanded,

bursting past the officers into the grand foyer with Clara right behind me.

“Where is she,

Arthur?!”

Before Arthur could sneer a reply,

a muffled,

frantic pounding echoed from down the hallway leading toward the private study.

“Help! In here! Unlock the door!”

It was Chloe’s voice.

Without hesitation,

Detective Miller drew his sidearm and fired a single well-placed round into the brass doorklock of the study.

With a sharp kick,

the heavy mahogany door flew open.

Chloe stumbled out into the hallway,

her hair disheveled,

tears streaking her face,

and her ankle bruised where the paperweight had struck her.

“Chloe!” I cried out,

rushing forward and wrapping my arms around her in a fierce embrace.

“Are you okay?”

“He.

he locked me in the closet after trying to force me to sign papers,

” Chloe sobbed into my shoulder,

shaking violently.

“Where is Mom?”

As if summoned by the question,

Evelyn Vance emerged slowly from the rear sitting room,

walking with stiff,

measured dignity.

She looked at her handcuffed husband being pushed into the police cruiser,

then at the squad of armed troopers filling her pristine foyer.

Not a single tear fell from her eyes.

Her face was carved from absolute ice.

“You’ve ruined everything,

” Evelyn whispered softly as Detective Miller approached her with a second pair of handcuffs.

“We built an empire,

” I replied quietly,

looking her dead in the eye.

“You built a prison of fear.

And now,

May you like

your sentence has begun.
