Chapter 12 - The Interrogations and the Defense Crumbles

Inside the windowless interrogation room of the federal courthouse downtown,
Arthur Vance sat with his hands cuffed to the steel bolt of the metal table.
His bespoke designer suit was wrinkled,
his silver hair slightly disheveled,
but he still wore the arrogant sneer of a man who believed his money could buy eternity.
Across the metal table sat Detective Miller and a federal prosecutor named Vance—no relation,
thankfully.
“Mr.
Vance,
we have audio recordings from the night of August 14th,
physical residue samples matching Rohypnol derivatives,
financial ledgers from your private wall safe,
and sworn testimony from four separate victims spanning two decades,
” the federal prosecutor stated calmly,
sliding a thick binder across the table.
“Do you have any statement to make before we formally enter these charges into the grand jury record?”
Arthur glanced casually at the binder,
letting out a dry,
dismissive chuckle.
“You young people think you’ve uncovered some grand criminal conspiracy,
” Arthur scoffed,
leaning back in his chair despite the handcuffs.
“These are disgruntled former employees and hysterical family members spinning wild fantasies to extort money from a successful enterprise.
My legal team will pick this garbage apart in five minutes.
”
“Your legal team just resigned en masse twenty minutes ago,
Mr.
Vance,
” Detective Miller said evenly.
“Once they reviewed the bank routing numbers linking your personal corporate slush fund to the hush-money payouts,
they realized representing you was a fast track to being disbarred and indicted as accessories.
”
The arrogant smile finally vanished from Arthur’s face.
The color drained rapidly from his cheeks,
leaving him looking old,
frail,
and utterly cornered.
Meanwhile,
in an adjacent holding room,
Evelyn Vance sat in stony silence across from her defense attorney.
Unlike her husband,
Evelyn understood reality with chilling clarity.
She knew that the empire they had constructed was built on sand,
and the tide had finally come in.
“Mrs.
Vance,
the prosecution is offering a conditional plea deal if you cooperate fully with the investigation into the corporate embezzlement and obstruction of justice charges,
” her attorney whispered urgently.
Evelyn turned her piercing blue eyes slowly toward her lawyer.
“My husband built this family on absolute control,
” Evelyn said in a voice as cold as arctic ice.
“If he falls,
he falls alone.
Draft the cooperation agreement.
”
The betrayal was complete.
Within forty-eight hours of their arrest,
Evelyn’s legal team submitted a comprehensive dossier detailing every shell corporation,
every offshore bank account,
May you like
and every suppressed investigation orchestrated by Arthur over the past thirty years.
The Vance dynasty wasn't just crumbling—it was tearing itself apart from the inside out.
