Chapter 17 - Clara and Chloe Take the Stand

Following my testimony,
the prosecution systematically dismantled any remaining illusions of Arthur Vance's innocence by calling his past victims to the stand.
Clara Jenkins took the stand on the third day of the trial.
With quiet courage and unwavering composure,
Clara recounted how Arthur had drugged her twenty-two years ago in his private study,
how Evelyn had arrived at her hospital room with non-disclosure agreements and hush money,
and how the Vance family had threatened to destroy her entire life if she ever uttered a single word.
The courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop on the carpeted floor as Clara spoke.
Several jurors wiped away tears as she described the decades of psychological trauma she had carried in secret.
When the defense attorney attempted to cross-examine her by bringing up the signed NDA,
Clara looked him dead in the eye and delivered a line that silenced the gallery completely.
“A contract signed under the threat of total destruction is not an agreement,
” Clara stated firmly.
“It is a hostage ransom.
”
Next to take the stand was Chloe Vance.
Her appearance as a witness for the prosecution against her own father sent shockwaves through Arlington society.
Chloe detailed how her father had routinely manipulated,
controlled,
and endangered members of his own household to maintain absolute dominance.
She described waking up in my room,
discovering the residue on the nightstand,
and finding the hidden wall safe filled with decades of payoff records.
“My father didn't protect our family,
” Chloe told the jury,
her voice ringing with powerful emotion.
“He held us all hostage in a gilded cage built on fear,
lies,
and the ruined lives of innocent women.
It ends here.
”
Arthur Vance sat at the defense table,
glaring at his own daughter with a look of such pure,
unadulterated hatred that the bailiff stepped closer to the table with his hand resting on his taser.
Chloe did not flinch.
She looked down at her father with a quiet,
dignified pity that hurt him far more than any shouted insult ever could.
The prosecution rested its case just before lunch on the fourth day,
having presented an airtight mountain of evidence,
audio recordings,
May you like
financial audits,
and witness testimonies that left the defense with nowhere to hide.
