Chapter 18 - The Closing Arguments

The final day of the trial arrived with a heavy,

overcast sky that matched the grim mood inside the federal courtroom.

The gallery was packed to absolute capacity,

every seat occupied by journalists,

legal scholars,

and onlookers eager to witness the final chapter of the Vance family saga.

The federal prosecutor stood up for his closing argument,

buttoning his suit jacket as he stepped toward the jury box.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,

you have heard the evidence,

you have listened to the audio recordings,

and you have heard the brave testimonies of women who suffered in silence for decades,

” the prosecutor began,

his voice steady and resonant.

“Arthur Vance operated a private syndicate of intimidation,

relying on his wealth,

his influence,

and the complicity of his enablers to treat human beings as disposable pawns.

He believed that the law did not apply to him because he wrote the rules of his own little kingdom.

But today,

that kingdom has fallen.

The voice on that recording doesn't lie.

The financial ledgers don't lie.

The victims don't lie.

It is time to hold Arthur Vance fully accountable for his crimes.

When the prosecutor finished,

Arthur’s court-appointed public defender gave a brief,

uninspired closing statement,

acknowledging the overwhelming weight of the evidence and merely asking the jury for leniency given his client's advanced age.

Judge Sterling then turned her stern gaze toward the twelve jurors sitting in the box.

“Members of the jury,

you have your instructions,

” Judge Sterling announced clearly.

“You may now retire to the deliberation room to reach your verdict.

The jury stood up in unison and filed out of the courtroom toward the deliberation chamber.

The hours that followed were an eternity of agonizing suspense.

David,

Chloe,

Clara,

and I sat together in the designated family waiting area,

speaking in quiet,

nervous whispers as the clock ticked slowly toward late afternoon.

At 4:15 PM,

a sharp knock echoed from the courtroom bailiff.

“The jury has reached a verdict,

” the bailiff announced.

Our hearts pounding in our chests,

we stood up and walked back into the courtroom,

May you like

taking our seats as the jury filed slowly back in,

their expressions serious and resolute.
