Chapter 11 - The House of Cards Collapses

The arrest of Arthur and Evelyn Vance sent immediate shockwaves through the corporate elite of Arlington and beyond.

Within hours,

breaking news alerts flashed across major national news networks,

displaying helicopter footage of police cruisers leaving the estate with the once-untouchable patriarch and matriarch in handcuffs.

The corporate board of Vance Global Enterprises held an emergency midnight session,

immediately voting to suspend Arthur from his position as CEO and freeze all executive accounts pending federal investigation.

Back at the mansion,

the heavy silence of desolation replaced the suffocating tension of tyranny.

Chloe and I sat at the kitchen island,

the very place where just days ago her parents had ruled with absolute impunity.

“I can't believe any of this is real,

” Chloe whispered,

staring down at her mug of tea as her hands shook slightly.

“Every memory I have of growing up in this house.

it feels tainted now.

Like everything was built on a foundation of rot and lies.

“It was,

” I said gently,

resting a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“But you had the courage to break the cycle,

Chloe.

Without you opening that safe and refusing to stay silent when things got real,

Arthur might have gotten away with it again.

“Because you didn't give up,

” Chloe replied,

looking up at me with tears welling in her eyes,

her voice thick with genuine remorse.

“Rebecca,

I am so sorry.

For everything.

For two years,

I treated you like dirt,

I mocked you,

I believed every nasty thing my parents said about you.

And you.

you saved my life anyway.

“We saved each other,

” I corrected with a soft smile.

The front door swung open,

and David walked slowly into the kitchen.

He looked ten years older than he had when he left for Chicago,

his shoulders slumped and his expression hollowed out by shock and disbelief.

He looked between Chloe and me,

unable to meet our eyes.

“I went to the precinct,

” David said quietly,

his voice cracking as he pulled out a chair and sat down.

“I spoke with the federal prosecutor.

They showed me the files from the safe.

They showed me Clara Jenkins' deposition from twenty-two years ago.

He buried his face in his hands,

his body trembling with grief and humiliation.

“I defended him for years,

” David choked out,

the tears finally breaking through his defenses.

“Every time you tried to tell me something was wrong,

Rebecca,

I called you crazy.

I told myself you were just insecure.

I was such a coward.

“You were brainwashed by two sociopaths,

David,

” I said,

my voice softening as I looked at my husband.

“The question now isn't what happened in the past.

The question is what you choose to do right now.

David slowly raised his head,

wiping a tear from his cheek,

and nodded with grim determination.

“I’m signing over my voting shares to the victims' restitution fund,

” David said firmly.

May you like

“And I am going to take the witness stand against my own father.
