Chapter 13 - The Dark Syndicate Responds
Before Sofia could hit send,
the power in the building failed,
just like at the hospital,
the monitors went dark,
and the security alarms,
began to blare a warning,
the guards outside the door,
shouted in confusion,
followed by the sound,
of heavy footsteps approaching,
they are here,
Sofia whispered in terror,
they tracked our network usage,
they knew we would come here,
Daniel grabbed the main laptop,
slamming it shut,
shoving it into his backpack,
we need to move,
now,
he ordered,
pulling Sofia toward the back exit,
a window that led,
to an alleyway below,
the door to the room,
was blown open with explosives,
sending wood and metal shrapnel,
into the air,
two men in masks stepped through,
firing blindly into the dust,
Daniel pushed Sofia out the window,
helping her down to the fire escape,
before climbing out himself,
the bullets ripped through the glass,
above his head,
shattering the panes into dust,
they scrambled down the metal stairs,
the cold rain hitting them again,
as they reached the dark alley,
a black car was waiting,
at the end of the street,
its headlights turning on,
blinding them completely,
it was a trap from both sides,
they had nowhere to run,
Daniel pulled out the gun,
he had kept from the assassin,
pointing it at the approaching car,
ready to make his final stand,
but the car didn't speed up,
instead,
the driver's window rolled down,
revealing Detective Rossi,
his shoulder heavily bandaged,
but his expression grim and ready,
get in,
Rossi shouted,
unless you want to die here,
Daniel and Sofia didn't hesitate,
diving into the back seat,
as Rossi slammed on the gas,
the car roaring away,
just as the gunmen reached the window,

firing a useless volley of bullets,
into the darkness.
