Chapter 20 - The Light Above the Floor

It was a warm summer evening,
the sun was setting over the hills,
casting long golden shadows,
across the green grass of the yard,
the family sat together,
around a small wooden table,
having dinner under the open sky,
there were no walls to trap them,
no floors to divide them,
just the infinite sky above,
and the solid earth beneath,
Leo finished his meal quickly,
sliding down from his chair,
to hug his father's neck,
thank you for finding me,
daddy,
the boy whispered in his ear,
a phrase he said every night,
before going to sleep,
Daniel held him tight,
blinking back the tears,
that still came sometimes,
I will always find you,
my boy,
he promised fiercely,
no matter where they hide you,
no matter how deep the dark is,
I will always tear up the floorboards,
to bring you back to the light,
Ines looked up from her plate,
her eyes shining in the twilight,
the brother is warm now,
she said with a final nod,
closing the book on the past,
the nightmares were officially over,
the healing was finally complete,
they had faced the worst of humanity,
the deepest betrayals of blood,
and they had emerged victorious,
united and unbroken,
as the stars began to appear,
one by one in the dark blue sky,
Daniel looked around at his family,
knowing that the foundation they built,
was not made of wood or stone,
May you like
but of absolute,
undying love.
