Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Hospital
The silence that followed,
was thick and suffocating,
Daniel immediately pushed Mariana,
and Ines behind him,
shielding them with his body,
against the wall,
Detective Rossi pulled his weapon,
the metal clicking sharply,
in the dark corridor,
stay down,
Rossi whispered loudly,
don't move a muscle,
another soft pop sounded,
closer this time,
followed by the heavy thud,
of a body hitting the floor,
one of the guard officers,
was down,
Daniel's heart hammered,
against his ribs,
he could not let them take Leo,
not after finding him,
not after everything,
he looked around wildly,
his eyes adjusting to the dark,
seeing the faint green glow,
of the emergency exit sign,
he reached back,
grabbing Mariana's arm,
move to the room,
he whispered in her ear,
lock the door from inside,
protect our boy,
Mariana did not argue,
she grabbed Ines,
and slipped through the door,
into Leo's trauma bay,
sliding the heavy lock into place,
just as a shadow appeared,
at the end of the hallway,
the figure was tall,
holding a gun with a silencer,
moving with professional precision,
Rossi fired his weapon,
the loud bang explosive,
shattering the quiet hospital air,
sparks flew off the wall,
as the intruder returned fire,
the bullets ripping through plastic chairs,
and drywall,
Daniel scanned the floor,
finding a heavy metal stand,
used for holding IV bags,
he gripped it tightly,
his knuckles turning white,
waiting for the shadow,
to get close enough,
the intruder advanced slowly,
firing another shot,
that caught Rossi in the shoulder,
the detective groaned,
dropping to his knees,
losing his weapon,
the shooter raised his gun,
aiming directly at Rossi's head,
ready to execute him,
Daniel lunged forward,
swinging the heavy metal stand,
with all his remaining strength,
striking the intruder,
squarely in the face,
the man stumbled backward,
his gun firing blindly,
into the ceiling,

shattering a light fixture,
before he collapsed onto the floor.
