Chapter 8 - The Race for Medicine

The realization hit Daniel,
like a physical blow,
the enemy had planned everything,
even the medical sabotage,
they knew Leo would be weak,
they knew what he needed,
and they cut off the supply,
to force Daniel's hand,
what is the drug,
Daniel asked the doctor,
who was now standing by Mariana,
looking deeply concerned,
it is a specific antitoxin,
the doctor explained quickly,
your son has been poisoned,
slowly over many months,
with a rare sedative,
to keep him quiet,
underneath those floorboards,
without the antidote,
his organs will fail,
within twelve hours,
where can we find it,
Daniel asked,
his voice tight with urgency,
the central military hospital,
has a supply,
the doctor replied,
but it is across the city,
and with the storm outside,
and the traffic,
it will take too long,
by normal means,
Daniel looked at Detective Rossi,
who was being treated,
by another medical team,
I need your car,
Daniel said firmly,
I need your badge,
Rossi nodded weakly,
pointing to his discarded jacket,
take the keys,
he said between gasps of pain,
use the emergency lights,
don't stop for anyone,
Daniel grabbed the keys,
turning to Mariana,
stay here with Ines,
don't leave this room,
trust nobody except Rossi,
Mariana nodded bravely,
though her eyes were full of tears,
bring it back,
Daniel,
save our boy,
she whispered,
kissing his cheek,
Daniel ran down the hallway,
the gun tucked into his waistband,
the keys heavy in his hand,
he burst through the exit doors,
into the pouring rain,
the cold water soaking him instantly,
he found the unmarked police car,
scrambling into the driver's seat,
jamming the key into the ignition,
the engine roared to life,
and he flipped the switch,
for the sirens and lights,
he slammed his foot on the gas,
the tires screeching loudly,
as he launched the vehicle,
into the dangerous streets,
of Queretaro,
May you like
ready to fight time itself,
for the life of his son.
