Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The air in the grand dining room of the Sterling estate was thick,
it was heavy with the scent of roasted pine nuts,
and it carried the distinct aroma of old money,
The annual family gala was in full swing,
a gathering of New York’s absolute elite,
and Victoria Sterling stood at the head of the long mahogany table,
she stood like a queen presiding over her court,
her eyes sweeping across the assembly of wealthy relatives,
she relished the power she held over them all,
Then there was Clara,
Clara, who wore a simple dress from a department store sale,
Clara, whose hands were still calloused from working two jobs,
jobs she held before she married Victoria’s son, Julian,
To Victoria, Clara was more than just a daughter-in-law,
Clara was a virus that had infected their pristine bloodline,
a visible reminder of a world Victoria despised,
The tension in the room grew until it broke during the toast,
Clara stood up to present a vintage bottle of wine,
it was a peace offering, a gesture of goodwill,
Clara had spent weeks tracking down this specific vintage,
"I hoped we could celebrate a new beginning, Mother Sterling,"
Clara said, her voice trembling but ultimately sincere,
Victoria’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits,
She didn't take the bottle,
Instead, she stood up,
and her diamonds caught the light from the massive chandelier,
shining like icy daggers,
"A new beginning?"
Victoria’s laugh was cold, cutting through the murmurs,
it silenced the wealthy guests in an instant,
"You think a cheap bottle of fermented grapes erases where you came from, Clara?"
she asked, her voice dripping with venom,
"You are a waitress playing dress-up, Clara,
You do not belong at this table,
You never will,"
"Julian loves me," Clara whispered,
tears stinging her eyes, blurring her vision,
"Our marriage isn't about money,"
"In this family, everything is about legacy!"
Victoria hissed, leaning in, her face inches from Clara's,
In a flash of blind rage, Victoria lunged forward,
With a violent shove, she slammed her hand against Clara's chest,
Clara stumbled backward,
her heels catching the edge of the heavy Persian rug,
the world seemed to spin in slow motion around her,
Clara crashed heavily against the vintage crystal display cabinet,
The impact shattered the delicate glass doors,
A heavy crystal decanter rolled off the shelf,
it smashed directly against Clara’s forearm,
before shattering onto the hardwood floor,
A sharp gasp echoed across the silent room,
Clara lay on the floor,
surrounded by glittering shards of glass,
and the dark, pooling stain of spilled red wine,
it looked terrifyingly like blood to everyone watching,
Pain seared through her arm, a sharp, white-hot sensation,
She looked down to see a deep, jagged cut across her forearm,
bright red blood beginning to ooze rapidly,
it was staining her pastel dress, creating a crimson flower,
Victoria didn't flinch,
She simply looked down at the bleeding girl,
she looked with utter contempt,
she adjusted her pearl necklace, a cold, calculated gesture,
"Clean this mess up," Victoria commanded the staff,
May you like
she ignored the horror on the guests' faces,
"And take the trash out with it," she added, turning away.
