Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Factor
The rejection of the settlement had sent shockwaves through the family council,
Victoria was furious, her attempts at damage control were failing,
She had underestimated Clara's resilience and Julian's newfound strength,
She decided to escalate the conflict,
She held a meeting with the family’s head lawyers,
"I want Julian formally removed as heir," Victoria commanded,
"He has publicly defamed the family, he is a liability,"
The lead lawyer, a shrewd man named David Harrison, hesitated,
"Mrs. Sterling, Julian’s claim is established in the family trust,
It is extremely difficult to disinherit a blood relative,"
"He has broken his moral obligation to the legacy," Victoria argued,
"I want you to find a way, any way,"
"There may be a clause about bringing the family name into disrepute," Harrison suggested,
"But it would be a long and costly legal battle,
and it could be very damaging for the Sterling reputation,"
"I don't care about the cost," Victoria declared,
"He is dead to me, and he will receive nothing,"
She wanted to leave Julian with nothing, to force him to return on his knees,
Meanwhile, the public interview had opened new doors for Julian,
He was contacted by a human rights attorney, Ms. Sarah Jenkins,
He had thought it was the reporter again, but it was another woman,
"I've seen the case, Mr. Sterling, and I want to help," she offered,
"We can file a civil suit for assault and battery,
We can get justice for Clara,"
"A lawsuit? My family will fight us with everything they have," Julian hesitated,
He was worried about the pressure on Clara,
"We can do this, Julian, We can win," Sarah reassured,
"But we need evidence, We need witnesses,"
Witnesses... that was the problem,
Everyone at the gala was a Sterling ally or an employee who feared for their job,
"There must be someone who will tell the truth," Clara suggested,
She was slowly regaining hope,
Julian thought about the guests, trying to recall anyone who might break rank,
Then, he remembered a young cousin, Liam,
Liam was a struggling musician who had always resented the family’s constraints,
