Chapter 4 - The Sterling Standard

Victoria Sterling stood in her private study,

the fireplace casting long, dancing shadows,

She held a crystal glass of aged scotch,

the liquid swirling like amber fluid,

The annual gala had been a disaster,

not because of the violence, but because of the public departure,

Her son, her heir, had chosen a lower-class waitress over his legacy,

It was unfathomable, a complete rejection of everything she valued,

She took a long sip of the scotch, its burn comforting,

She had to fix this, before the whispers turned into a roar,

She needed to control the narrative, to protect the Sterling name,

She picked up her phone, the screen illuminating her determined face,

She dialed her publicist, the man who had buried multiple scandals over the years,

"We have a situation," Victoria began, her voice steady,

"It’s Julian, he’s made a rash decision,

The public needs to understand his... confusion,"

She listened to the man on the other end, his voice smooth and reassuring,

"We need to paint Clara as a gold-digger, a woman who manipulated him,"

"And Julian?" the publicist asked,

"Julian needs to be portrayed as a man of honor, but a bit naive,

He was trying to do the right thing, but he was misguided,"

Victoria set down her glass, a small smirk playing on her lips,

This was what the Sterlings did best: we reshaped reality,

"And what about the accident?" the publicist inquired,

"Accident? There was no accident," Victoria stated, her tone turning ice cold,

"She tripped, She was clumsy,

A valuable piece of crystal was shattered because of her carelessness,"

She ended the call, satisfied with the initial plan,

Next, she needed to deal with Arthur, her husband,

Arthur, who had stood by and let Julian walk out,

She found him in the library, staring at the empty fireplace,

"You allowed this to happen, Arthur," she accused,

her voice low but dangerous,

"I couldn't stop him, Victoria," he said, his voice weary,

"He was protecting his wife,"

"His wife? You mean that waitress?" she spat,

"He walked away from us, Arthur, from everything we’ve built,"

"Maybe we pushed him too far, Victoria," Arthur suggested,

He was a weak man, always had been,

"We set standards, Arthur, The Sterling standards,

If he cannot live by them, he does not deserve the name,"

"What are we going to do?" he asked, his voice filled with dread,

"We are going to bring him back, Arthur,

We will use the inheritance as leverage,

But first, we will destroy the thing that he thinks is holding him,"

She turned and left the library, her mind already moving to the next phase,

She would not let a simple girl from Queens destroy her family's legacy,

May you like

She would tear Clara down, piece by piece,

until Julian had no choice but to return to the safety of his mother's world.
