Chapter 3 - Blood on Pastel

The ride to the hospital felt endless,

The emergency room was a stark contrast to the Sterling dining room,

it was filled with the sounds of suffering and the sterile smell of antiseptic,

Clara was pale, her breathing shallow,

The blood had soaked through the makeshift bandage Julian had applied,

He paced the waiting room, his tailored suit now stained,

He felt guilty for not acting sooner,

for allowing his mother's words to silence him,

He had thought his love for Clara could shield her,

he was wrong, he was foolish,

The cut was deep, requiring several layers of stitches,

The doctor had mentioned possible nerve damage,

"Nerve damage?" Julian had asked, his voice trembling,

Clara was an artist, her hands were her life,

He couldn't imagine her without her creativity,

He wanted to call his father, but he knew Victoria would intercept,

He was truly on his own now, for the first time in his life,

He sat down, burying his face in his hands,

the sound of Victoria’s laugh still echoed in his mind,

"waitress playing dress-up," she had said,

He hated that his family's money had made him weak,

he had always believed the inheritance was his right,

Now, he realized it was a cage, a golden cage,

Clara was the only thing that felt real to him,

the only thing worth fighting for,

The doctor finally emerged, his expression tired,

"The surgery was successful," he said,

"We were able to repair the major vessels and some of the nerve,

But she will need extensive physical therapy,"

"Will she paint again?" Julian asked, his voice a whisper,

"It's too early to say, Mr. Sterling,

We need to monitor her recovery closely,"

Julian felt a wave of relief, but also a crushing sadness,

Clara was safe, but her future was uncertain,

He was allowed to see her in the recovery room,

She looked frail against the hospital sheets,

her pastel dress, now cut away, lay discarded in a bin,

it was a symbol of the life Victoria wanted to destroy,

He took her uninjured hand, kissing her calloused fingertips,

"I'm so sorry, Clara," he whispered, tears streaming down his face,

"I will make this right, I promise you,"

Clara’s eyes flickered open, filled with a mixture of pain and love,

"Julian..." she breathed, "you came..."

"I am always going to be with you, Clara," he said,

"We are going to start over, away from all of this,"

"Your inheritance..." she managed to whisper,

"It means nothing without you," he replied,

He meant it, with every fiber of his being,

He would work as a barista, a waiter, anything,

as long as he could build a life free from his family's shadow,

Clara closed her eyes again, a small smile playing on her lips,

May you like

She trusted him, she believed in him,

And he knew he could never let her down again.
