Chapter 2 - The Echo of the Fall

Julian stood frozen, his world tilting,

The echoes of the crash reverberated in his mind,

he watched his mother's cold dismissal,

The scene before him was a nightmare,

Clara, his wife, lay bleeding on the polished floor,

her pastel dress stained with crimson,

her eyes wide with shock and pain,

He couldn't reconcile the woman who raised him with this monster,

Victoria, the matriarch, the pillar of Sterling society,

she had just committed an act of violence against his wife,

He finally moved, breaking free from the paralyzing shock,

He rushed to Clara's side, his heart pounding in his chest,

He knelt beside her, his tailored suit ignored,

He took her trembling, uninjured hand,

Clara gasped as he touched her, her eyes unfocused,

"Julian..." she managed, her voice a fragile whisper,

He looked at the deep gash on her arm,

it was serious, the blood was flowing too quickly,

He needed a bandage, something to stop the bleeding,

He looked up, his gaze meeting his mother's,

Victoria was walking away, her back straight,

she was speaking to a servant about the cleanup,

"Wait!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with emotion,

The dining room fell silent again, even the whispers stopped,

His father, Arthur Sterling, stood by the table, ashen-faced,

Arthur looked between his son and his wife,

he was a man torn between two forces,

"Arthur, call an ambulance," Julian commanded,

He looked at his wife, her face turning pale,

He couldn't trust his mother to help,

"No ambulance," Victoria said, turning around slowly,

her face was set, a mask of unyielding determination,

"We will take care of this internally, Julian,"

"She's bleeding, Mother!" Julian countered, his anger rising,

"This requires professional medical attention,"

"This is a minor cut," Victoria lied, her tone dismissive,

"We have excellent doctors who can attend to her quietly,

We don't need scandal, we don't need police,"

"Scandal? Is that all you care about?" Julian challenged,

He couldn't believe his ears,

his wife was injured, and his mother was focused on public perception,

"Our reputation is paramount, Julian,

You should remember that, above all else,"

"She needs to go to a hospital," Clara whispered,

her head rolling to the side, fighting to stay conscious,

"She is going nowhere but the East Wing guest room," Victoria stated,

she was asserting her dominance,

she was testing Julian's loyalty,

"I will not allow my wife to be treated like a prisoner," Julian declared,

He felt a fire ignite within him,

a determination he hadn't known he possessed,

He lifted Clara gently into his arms,

ignoring the gasps of the remaining guests,

he walked toward the main exit, bypassing his mother,

"If you walk out that door, Julian, you walk away from your inheritance," Victoria threatened,

her voice was low, but it carried to every corner of the room,

Julian stopped, his back to her,

He looked down at Clara, whose eyes were fluttering shut,

He felt the weight of her body, her fragile life,

"I'm walking away from you, Mother," Julian replied,

his voice steady now, resolute,

May you like

He stepped out of the dining room, out of the Sterling estate,

carrying his wife toward a future he could finally choose.
