Chapter 7 - THE ACTIVATION OF CODE BLACK

Inside the heavy black case lay three specific items,
preserved perfectly in custom-cut military foam,
untouched by the passage of time.
The first item was a sleek,
military-grade satellite telephone,
capable of bypassing commercial cellular networks and connecting directly to classified orbital systems.
The second item was a thick,
hard plastic emergency authentication card,
bearing an encrypted alphanumeric code that verified his high clearance level.
The third item was a laminated contact sheet containing a single,
unlisted telephone number from a covert life he had buried long ago.
Henry picked up the satellite phone,
his fingers remembering the exact weight and texture of the device without a moment of hesitation.
He powered on the unit,
watching the digital screen cycle through a series of intense encryption protocols before establishing a secure uplink.
The connection tone clicked sharply in his ear,
a rhythmic,
electronic pulsing that signaled the call was being routed through a secure server in Washington.
He did not wait for the person on the other end to introduce themselves,
knowing the protocols by heart.
"We have a Code Black situation,"
Henry said quietly,
his voice entirely devoid of human emotion,
sounding like a machine executing a command.
"I need you to burn it all down,
leave absolutely nothing standing of the Vance infrastructure."
Several agonizing seconds passed in absolute silence on the line,
the only sound being the faint static of a secure satellite connection.
Then,
a calm,
measured voice answered him from a nameless office thousands of miles away,
recognizing his unique voiceprint instantly.
The voice asked only one highly specific question,
seeking the final confirmation required to unleash an agency's full destructive potential.
"Are you absolutely certain about this,
Apex?"
the voice inquired,
using the legendary code name that Henry had carried through a dozen black operations.
"Once we initiate this specific protocol,
there is no way to halt the asset liquidation or stop the investigation."
"Initiate the protocol immediately,"
Henry replied firmly,
before ending the call and sliding the phone back into its foam slot.
The moment he closed the heavy case,
he knew that Nathan's comfortable,
sheltered world was about to change forever,
and no amount of money could save him.
The Vance family believed they owned the local town,
the local courts,
and the local police department,
which was entirely true.
But they did not own the federal government,
they did not own the international banking systems,
and they certainly did not own Apex.
Henry climbed into the driver's seat of his truck,
started the powerful engine,
and backed out of the long driveway without looking at the mansion.
He looked over at Sophia,
who had closed her eyes against the pain,
her breathing shallow but stable as the truck moved down the road.
The hunt had officially begun,
May you like
and Henry was no longer the prey,
he was the executioner.
